The Havighurst Center, in cooperation with the Russian program in the Department of German, Russian, Asian, and Middle Eastern Languages and Cultures (GRAMELAC), recommends the following language programs to students interested in studying abroad in Russia, Eastern Europe and Eurasia.  For more information about the programs, transferring credits and travel funding, contact Dr. Ben Sutcliffe, GRAMELAC, sutclibm@miamioh.edu or Dr. Steve Norris, Director of the Havighurst Center, norriss1@miamioh.edu.

Russian Language in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan 

Spend a semester immersed in Russian language in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan through Miami's new Co-Sponsored program. Students will take intensive Russian language and Kyrgyz culture courses, and will have the opportunity to stay with a host family to further increase their language skills. 

 This program offers multiple cultural excursions built into the program fee. Past excursions have included:

  • Weekend trip to a Kyrgyz village for a yurt building ceremony
  • Walking tour of the city
  • Ata – Beiit Memorial to the Stalinist purges
  • Master classes (traditional crafts and/or cooking)
  • Ala-Archa National Park
  • Museum of Fine Arts
  • Historical Museum (ancient to modern local history)
  • Barskoon Waterfall

As a co-sponsored program, you will pay Miami tuition plus a program fee while applying your Miami scholarships. Contact educationabroad@miamioh.edu to learn more.


AIFS Study Abroad in Russia

Summer, semester or academic year
(no previous Russian language study required)

This program is co-sponsored with AIFS to provide an approved home bill semester study abroad opportunity for Russian language minors and for majors in Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies. As a co-sponsored program, you will pay Miami tuition plus a program fee while applying your Miami scholarships.


Lithuania Program

Miami University’s Havighurst Center for Russian and Post-Soviet Studies has created a new Lithuania Program, which will help bring attention to this Baltic country, NATO ally, and EU member as well as allow Miami students to study in Lithuania (including internship and research opportunities).  For more information, contact Dr. Neringa Klumbyte, Anthropology, klumbyn@miamioh.edu.
