Volunteer Guidelines

All volunteers will be given a brief farm and food safety orientation before staring work. You will be doing basic farming tasks—planting, caring for, harvesting, processing, and packing produce. We ask that volunteers commit to working a minimum of 2 hours.

Volunteers should make sure they follow basic work hygiene practices:

  • Wear clean clothes.
  • Do not wear large jewelry including necklaces, earrings, and bracelets.
  • Tie back hair.

Please be sure to bring a sun hat, water, a snack, and sunscreen.

All volunteers working on the Institute for Food farm must adhere to the following food safety practices:

  • Wash your hands before beginning work, returning to work, and after using the restroom.
  • There is no smoking on the farm.
  • Eating is only allowed in designated areas away from washing, packing, and storage areas.
  • A first aid kit is available in the storage shed on the farm. Please stop working and take care of any cut, abrasion, or injury incurred while working on the farm immediately and report it to the farm supervisor for proper treatment.
  • If you are sick or show symptoms of sickness (fever, coughing, sore throat, runny nose, vomiting, diarrhea, infected cuts), you will be asked not to volunteer that day.
