Though nursing homes are considered long-term care options for the elderly, Ohio is seeing a trend of younger residents using the facilities.

In the state, one in five long-stay Medicaid residents are under the age of 65 — a rate that's higher than the national average, according to a study from Miami University's Scripps Gerontology Center.

"We've typically had this image of a nursing home of being older adults, and now they are middle older adults," said Ian Matt Nelson, research scholar at the center and co-author of the report.
