Experiences of Older Adults During the 2020 COVID-19 Pandemic in the United States: An Initial Exploration of Nationally Representative Data at the Intersection of Gender and Race

05/01/2022

Little is known about the overall experiences and feelings of diverse older populations during the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic. To provide the baseline information for future research and policy, this study analyzed the 2020 Health and Retirement Study COVID-19 project data (n = 1782). More than 70% of older adults reported the following activities: watching TV (98%), reading (90%), using a computer and the internet (83%), gardening (82%), walking (75%), baking and cooking (73%), and praying (73%)....

Determinants of COVID-19 testing among late middle-aged and older adults: applying the health belief model

03/25/2022

The purpose of this study was to examine correlates of taking a COVID-19 test among late middle-aged and older adults using nationally representative data. Results found that concern about the pandemic was associated with an increase in the likelihood of taking a test among late middle-aged adults. Knowing someone who was diagnosed with COVID-19 was associated with taking a test in most age categories. Financial barriers and knowing someone who died of COVID-19 were not associated with taking a...

How accumulated wealth affects driving reduction and cessation

04/29/2020

Older adults can expect to live between 6 and 10 years after they give up driving, but driving reduction and cessation (DRC) are not equally experienced by all groups. Individual characteristics such as poor health, impaired vision, older age, and female gender are known to affect DRC. Using cumulative disadvantage theory as a guide, this study assessed the role played by wealth in DRC among older adults.

Trends, determinants and the implications of population aging in Iran

03/05/2020

Fertility and mortality decline are major drivers of Iran's population aging. A rapid and sharp fall in fertility rates over the past three decades as well as a substantial rise in life expectancy are causing rapid aging of Iran's population. This paper uses the 2015 United Nations Population Division data to discuss the trends, determinants and the implications of population aging in Iran.

Marital quality, marital dissolution, and mortality risk during the later life course

07/25/2016

This study examines the relationship between later-life marital quality, marital dissolution, and mortality using discrete-time event history models with data from nine waves (1992–2008) of the Health and Retirement Study (n = 7388). Results show marital status is more important for men's mortality risk than women's, whereas marital quality is more important for women's survival than men's. Being widowed or divorced more than two years raises mortality risk for men, but later-life marital...

Healthy Aging in the Context of Educational Disadvantage: The Role of "Ordinary Magic"

07/20/2016

The objective of this study is to examine the correlates of healthy aging in the context of educational disadvantage and the extent to which identified correlates are shared with the wider, more educationally advantaged population. Among educationally disadvantaged adults, demographic characteristics (e.g., age), health practices (e.g., physical activity), and the presence of health conditions were independently correlated with healthy aging. With few exceptions, correlates of healthy aging were...

Generativity in elderly Oblate Sisters of Providence

10/28/2014

This paper explored how generativity and well-being merged in a group of childless older women: African and Hispanic Roman Catholic Religious Sisters, linking two minority identity characteristics. Findings also reveal that the experiences of a subculture in society—African-American elderly women religious—add to theories and definitions of...

Childless Elders in Assisted Living: Findings from the Maryland Assisted Living Study

04/10/2013

We compared data drawn from a random sample of 399 current assisted living (AL) residents and a subsample of 222 newly admitted residents for two groups: childless AL residents and AL residents with children. The percentage of childless AL residents (26%) in our study was slightly higher than US population estimates of childless persons age 65 and over (20%). In the overall sample, the two groups differed significantly by age, race and women’s years of education. The childless group was...
