Scripps Gerontology Center researchers share a focus on research that aims to positively impact the lives of older adults, their families, and the community. Through webinars, their research is shared with a wider audience of professionals in the field of aging, older adults and their family members, and others interested in aging issues. These webinars present research findings and information on a variety of aging-related topics such as caregiving, preference-based care, and creative arts programming.

Person-Centered Home and Community Based Services: What Matters Most

This webinar describes the fundamentals of person-centered care and a consumer guide that can be used with older adults living receiving services in their homes. The consumer guide is called What Matters Most and the presenters walk attendees through the indented use of the guide and discuss strategies for implementing the guide. Finally, the presenters answer frequently asked questions.

Achieving Caregiver Respite and Support

This webinar focuses on respite, which involves a temporary break or relief from caregiving, and support for caregivers to adults living in the community. The presenters share what they have learned about supporting caregivers through years of listening, observing, and collaborating with professionals and caregivers. The webinar presents a four-level model for caregiver respite and support. Also, the webinar discusses key questions from the model that you can use in your work or organization and/or apply to programs and interventions supporting caregivers.

Funding Arts Webinar 

In this webinar, presenters share ways for not-for-profit organizations to find funding to implement creative arts programs. The webinar introduces the Opening Minds through Art (OMA) program which is an intergenerational art program for individuals with dementia and discusses funding opportunities for long-term care facilities in Ohio to replicate OMA. Also, the presenters share how to apply for OMA funding in Ohio.

People who receive long-term services and supports often experience better health and wellbeing when their preferences are understood and honored. Their quality of life is enhanced by greater connection, autonomy, dignity, and satisfaction. When You Can't Ask the Resident: Practice Guidelines for Asking Proxies About Resident Preferences

This webinar discusses how to involve a proxy, such as a family member or friend, for an individual who cannot participate fully in a PELI interview due to cognitive or communication impairment. Presenters discuss strategies to identify a proxy who knows the individual well, methods to collect preference information, and what to do if the individual does not have a proxy.
