Prizes

Senior Prizes in English

Awarded by the department of English, the Senior Prizes recognize outstanding work by graduating seniors majoring or minoring in the English Department. Prizes will be awarded in the following categories:

  1. Outstanding Creative Work (two prizes of $100)
  2. Outstanding Critical Essay (two prizes of $100)
  3. Writing for a Public or Non-Academic Audience (two prizes of $100)

Online submissions are due by March 1, 2024 and will be judged for quality and originality by English department faculty. Winners will be notified by email and invited to be recognized and to receive their prizes at the celebration for the English department in May.

Requirements and Eligibility

  • Eligible are seniors graduating in spring/ summer of 2024 with majors or minors in the English department (in Literature, Creative Writing, Professional Writing, or Linguistics).
  • There is no minimum length requirement for any category; however, submissions should be no longer than 25 double-spaced pages in length or the equivalent.
  • Applicants may submit entries in one or more categories; multiple submissions in a single category are not allowed.
  • Work that has previously won an award (e.g. last year as part of a scholarship application) may not be submitted for a senior prize, though previous winners are encouraged to submit new work.

Academy of American Poets Prize

Miami University offers two prestigious Academy of American Poets prizes of $100 each for an undergraduate and a graduate student: the Harris S. Abrahams Poetry Prize (undergraduate) and the Betty Jane Abrahams Memorial Poetry Prize (graduate).

Winning poets under 23 years of age will be considered for the $1000 Aliki Perroti and Seth Frank Most Promising Young Poet Award.

  • All majors can apply.
  • Submit a single Microsoft Word document of no more than five (5) pages and containing up to two (2) poems.
  • Ensure that your name does not appear in the document or in the filename.
  • Upload the document via the Academy of American Poets Prize Submission Form before the deadline March 1, 2024.

Literary London Prize

The Literary London Prize awards outstanding work focused on travel to London, England. Two categories are awarded: creative work and non-fiction/ essay.

Requirements and Eligibility

  • Eligible are students enrolled in Miami English programs and/ or Literary London summer study abroad program alumni (2015-present).
  • Submissions should be no longer than 3000 words.
  • Only one writing entry per student will be accepted.
  • Upload your submission via the Literary London Prize Submission Form.

This prize is awarded in the fall. Deadline for the year 2023/24 will be announced.
