Jonathan teaches a range of introductory and advanced courses in Anthropology and Latin American, Latino/a and Caribbean Studies, including courses cross-listed with Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies and Black World Studies.


Jonathan is a Visiting Assistant Professor in Anthropology and Latin American, Latino/a and Caribbean Studies. Jonathan has been conducting ethnographic and ethnohistorical research on the southern coast of Bahia, Brazil for a decade and a half. His research focusing on issues ranging from race, inequalities, and social hierarchies to land rights movements and ecological politics.

His current book project, entitled Emancipation Work: Reconstruction and Renewal in the Aftermath of Brazilian Slavery, traces the multigenerational struggles by which freed slaves, their descendants, and other members of the rural poor have sought to realize the promise of freedom in Brazil's post-emancipation period.
