The Department of German, Russian, Asian and Middle Eastern Languages and Cultures (GRAMELAC) consists of six distinct language, literature, and culture programs: Arabic, Chinese, German, Japanese, Korean, and Russian. A minimum sequence of four courses is offered in each of these languages, enabling students to complete the two-year College of Arts and Science language requirement.

The department is dedicated to preparing internationally oriented citizens who understand and appreciate other cultures and can interact effectively and appropriately with native speakers in the target cultures. We teach students language skills in Arabic, Chinese, German, Korean, Japanese, and Russian, as well as introduce them to the cultures and literatures of the countries where those languages are spoken.

The department‘s mission reflects the broader university mission in providing the opportunities of a major university while offering the personalized attention found in the best small colleges. GRAMELAC faculty members instill in their students intellectual depth and curiosity, emphasizing critical thinking and independent thought, an appreciation of diverse views, and a sense of responsibility for our global future.
