Patricia Gallagher Newberry

Patricia Gallagher Newberry joined the Miami faculty in 1997 after a 15-year career in the newspaper industry. In addition to teaching an array of journalism classes – from introductory to senior capstone courses – Newberry serves as area coordinator of the Journalism Program; directs the winter-term NYC Media program; chairs the Committee on Student Media Organizations; and assists with departmental events.

On the teaching front, Newberry has created a number of courses over the years, including ones related to ethics, business journalism, investigative reporting, Freedom Summer and New York-based "big media." She has also taught with Miami's "Inside Washington" program. During her newspaper years, Newberry worked mostly as a business reporter, editor and columnist for 10 papers in seven states, with about half of those years at The Cincinnati Enquirer.

Newberry served on the Society of Professional Journalists board for seven years, ending as national president in 2019-20. She remains on the national SPJ Foundation board. She is also active as a freelance writer and community volunteer. Newberry earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. She lives in Cincinnati with her husband and three adult children, two of whom are Miami graduates. For more information, visit
