Dr. Robin S. Heinsen to Join Music Faculty

Robin Heinsen

The Department of Music at Miami University is pleased to announce that Dr. Robin S. Heinsen will join the faculty effective Fall 2022, in the area of Music Education. Dr. Heinsen earned both the BM and the MM in Music Education at the University of Georgia, and spent eight years teaching in the public schools in Georgia as a middle school band director. She will defend her dissertation this summer at the University of Texas at Austin, where she will earn the PhD in Music and Human Learning.

Dr. Heinsen’s research interests include cognition of expert and novice teachers, preservice teacher skill development, learner-centered pedagogy, and lifelong music learning. She uses eye tracking technology to study attention allocation and momentary thought processes of music teachers and shares her work consistently at national and international music conferences and in research journals.

“We are very excited to welcome Dr. Heinsen to our department,” noted department chair, Dr. Chris Tanner. “Dr. Heinsen was selected through a rigorous national search process, and she exemplifies Miami’s teacher-scholar model. We anticipate her contributions to our community to be both immediate and substantive.”

Dr. Heinsen offered the following thoughts regarding her recent appointment: "I have so far been blown away by the kindness, professionalism, and musical excellence of the Miami University Department of Music, and I can't wait to officially join the faculty in the fall. I look forward to getting to know the students, learning about the community, and training the next generation of music educators.”
