Biomedical Engineering
Biomedical engineering is a branch of engineering that integrates life sciences and engineering. Biomedical engineers analyze, design, synthesize, and test products and processes in a variety of areas, such as medical equipment and instrumentation, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, prosthetics and biomimetic materials.
At Miami, biomedical engineering students learn to apply the concepts of chemistry, physics, biological sciences, and mathematics to solve problems in bioprocess engineering, medical products development, and research and development. Within the biomedical engineering curriculum, students can select technical electives so as to focus on the following areas:

Bioinformatics involves integration of computational sciences and engineering with biology to facilitate storage, organization, and analysis of biological data. This field has applications in drug discovery as well as in diagnosis of diseases at molecular level.

Biomedical is the application of engineering and scientific principles to create medical devices to improve human health. Applications range from development of prostheses, biomaterials, medical implants and various imaging equipment such as EEGs and MRIs.

Bioprocessing involves the development of products, processes, and equipment related to biofuels, pharmaceuticals, food and agricultural industries.

Pre-medical incorporates educational elements that help the student prepare for admission to medical school as well as other health-related graduate programs.
