Chair's Message

Helaine Alessio
Thank you for your interest in Miami University’s Department of Kinesiology, Nutrition, and Health (KNH). The information on our website can introduce you to the rich history of the department that began over 120 years ago. In the early days of Miami University, the department’s focus on physical activity changed to athletics where the tradition of the “Cradle of Coaches” began in 1925. The department continues its alliances with intercollegiate sports and has also developed excellent programs of study in Kinesiology, Public Health, Nutrition and Dietetics.

Departments at other universities also focus on the study of health and physical activity. What sets us apart is our emphasis on undergraduate education. While we offer two highly regarded master's concentrations, most our students are undergraduates. Miami faculty work with students in local, regional, national and international teaching, research, and service projects, giving students hands-on experiences that prepare them for exciting and rewarding careers in health fields. Even as a first-year student you will have the opportunity to be taught by and work alongside faculty who are teachers, clinicians, and scholars with national and international reputations. Our inclusion of societal and cultural forces that affect health and performance provides important perspectives that complement students’ understanding of health disparities and performance differences.

Phillips Hall underwent a multi-million dollar renovation to classrooms and laboratories. State-of-the-art equipment is constantly being added for student learning and inquiry in nutrition, public health, and kinesiology. I hope you will visit us and meet our faculty and students. In the meantime please explore our site to learn more about our programs and facilities.
