Open Writing Hours

We know that writing is difficult. It's not natural, but a skill we develop across time and with practice. We also know that writing is social. For these reasons, we are glad to host weekly Writing Hours that all faculty, staff, and graduate students are invited to attend.

This Fall, writing Hours will happen in a hybrid format every Friday, 8:30AM—12:00PM. Up to 6 people may attend in-person at the HCWE; others can join remotely via Google Meet. You can drop in (in-person or virtually) when it's convenient for you and come and go as you like.

Our hope is that these sessions provide that extra bit of motivation and camaraderie you need to keep your writing and research projects going. We encourage you to schedule this time into your calendar each week to start a writing habit, and, if you're so inclined, invite a colleague or two to join you for extra motivation.

A Note About Safety: Miami's current COVID safety protocol requires that everyone wear face coverings indoors at all times, regardless of vaccination status, except as exempted under the university’s COVID-19 policy (e.g. when working in your office alone, when in your residence hall room). Miami has also requested that groups not eat or drink together indoors, so we will not be offering coffee or snacks for in-person attendees.

Here's how to participate:

  • On Friday mornings, sign in on this Google Sheet (using your Miami login) and state your goal.
  • If you want to write with others, you can join the Google Meet virtual room via the link in the Google Sheet. Please turn off your audio and introduce yourself to others using the chat. It's up to you whether you'd like to have your video on or off.
  • Come and go as you like. When you do finish up for the day, update your accomplishments on the Google Sheet.
  • If you need any assistance or would like a short writing consultation, contact the HCWE staff member listed at the top of the Google Sheet.
