Leaves and Time Off

For many reasons, you may need (or, of course, just deserve!) time away from the job. Whether for enjoyment, illness, legal requirements, or business, time off is offered by Miami through a variety of programs.

Illness, Injury, or Death

Accumulated sick leave hours can be used for illness, injury, and bereavement time off in the event of an immediate family member's death. For extended time off due to illness or injury of you or a family member, you are entitled to leave under the Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA). The University requires a Return to Work certification for all employees who are returning to work after a specific leave of absence for their own serious health condition.

If injured on the job, you must file a claim for Workers' Compensation.

Personal Time

You accrue vacation hours based on the position into which you are hired. When eligible, you can take compensatory time in place of overtime pay. The accumulated comp time can be used in place of vacation or sick leave. Sometimes you may need extended time off when you do not have enough vacation, comp time, or sick leave available. In this case, you can request personal leave.

Paid parental leave is offered to new parents.

Military and Court Leaves

In addition to the more common types of leave, Miami also provides military leave, reserve duty, and court attendance (jury duty, witness testimony) in accordance with state and federal laws (MUPIM).
