General Function

Provides basic medical treatment and assists physician in the treatment and care of more complicated medical conditions

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities—Essential Functions

  • Determines nature of patient's health problem; obtains medical history; takes vital signs including blood pressure, pulse, and temperature; makes determination on seriousness of situation and need for emergency care.
  • Assists physician in providing any needed surgical or other procedures to patient.
  • Performs various basic medical procedures including immunizations, starting intravenous infusions, and dressing wounds under physician's direction.
  • Provides patient education on condition, treatment, and medications.
  • Records information of patient's condition and treatment including symptoms, prescriptions, and any test results; maintains patient files.

Reporting Relationships

Direction Received: Reports to Nurse Supervisor.

Direction Given: Occasional training and instruction of classified staff; may provide functional guidance to classified staff.

Minimum Requirements

Requires an associate's degree in nursing and one year of nursing experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Licensure as a Registered Nurse is required.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Worker Characteristics

  • Knowledge of medical procedures and equipment
  • Ability to make good decisions in emergency situations
  • Knowledge of medications

Working Conditions

Physical effort usually requires considerable walking, standing, and lifting of materials weighing 25 to 50 pounds. Somewhat unpleasant working conditions with health hazards.
