Brief description of project: Replace standard SAS drives in the FSB VirtualPC desktop hosts with Solid State drives. Each host runs 40 virtual desktops. This would boost performance exponentially.

Does this project focus on graduate student education or graduate student life?: Yes

If yes, please explain: The virtual desktops are used by both graduate and undergraduate students

Describe the problem you are attempting to solve and your approach for solving that problem.: We want to improve performance when an entire class logs in at once. Many classes can't get into a lab so Professors have student's bring their laptops to class to access FSB's virtual desktop environment to work on class assignments. Also, as dataset size increases statistical programs utilize more virtual memory to process the data resulting in lots of I/O on disk drives. Conventional drives gives around 1650 Input/output operations per second whereas SSD would give 80,000 input/ouput operations per second this would increase performance substantially.

The criteria state that technology fee projects should benefit students in innovative and/or significant ways. How would you describe the innovation and/or significance of your project?: The virtual desktops are used by graduate and undergraduate to access FSB software's. We have more 1,500 students per semester who will be impacted by this upgrade. Students uses the virtual desktops in class and outside the class. During winter term and summer terms students uses virtual desktop when they travel overseas.

How will you assess the project?: We know of courses that uses the virtual desktops and also we have a software that's tracks the number of users who logs into the virtual desktop.

Have you applied for and/or received Tech Fee awards in past years?: Yes

If funded, what results did you achieve?: I got funding to increase memory in our server. The memory upgrade helped us to improve performance.

Did you submit a final report?: Yes

What happens to the project in year two and beyond? Will there be any ongoing costs such as software or hardware maintenance, supplies, staffing, etc.? How will these be funded?: The future cost will be responsibility of FSB IT.

Budget: Hardware

Hardware Title(s) & Vendor(s): Dell Serial ATA Solid State Hybrid Hard Drive - 960 GB & Dell

Hardware Costs: $26,857.44

What is the total budget amount requested?: $26,857.44

Comments: We have 4 servers that run virtual desktops Each server has 4 drivers cost per server is $6,714.36 Total server 4 * $6,714.36 = $26,857.44
