Brief description of project: Upgrade technology in the Libraries Group study rooms to make them easier to use. All portable devices should be easily usable in the study rooms.

Does this project focus on graduate student education or graduate student life?: No

Describe the problem you are attempting to solve and your approach for solving that problem.: The Libraries have placed in many of the Group Study rooms technology that gives users the ability to easily work in groups. This technology allows students to connect their computers and mobile devices including laptops, tablets and phones to the TVs provided in the rooms. This, at times has been a rather cumbersome task since the Libraries provided so many different options in order to serve all devices. Current technology has provided better options to allow for this screen sharing and requires an updating of hardware in the rooms. Essentially, this requires a Smart TV and a Crestron device connected to it to accept screencasting. For laptops a url is provided at the opening screen. For tablets and smart phones, an app is presented for download thus simplifying the process.

The criteria state that technology fee projects should benefit students in innovative and/or significant ways. How would you describe the innovation and/or significance of your project?: The Libraries are seeking to keep up with current Technology in offering this option to students. Currently ten study rooms in King and B.E.S.T Libraries are equipped with this now fast becoming outdated technology. The Libraries seek to remedy the situation by installing new hardware in each of these ten rooms.

How will you assess the project?: The project will be assessed by usage statistics along with anecdotal evidence gathered through personal contact with users.

Have you applied for and/or received Tech Fee awards in past years?: Yes

If funded, what results did you achieve?: In general most Library funded proposals have been quite successful. Although I have not been a principle in many of them, I have been involved with most. One failure that comes to mind is our Google Glass project. Google quit supporting the project just as it was getting off the ground.

Did you submit a final report?: Yes

What happens to the project in year two and beyond? Will there be any ongoing costs such as software or hardware maintenance, supplies, staffing, etc.? How will these be funded?: We expect this technology to work for several years with little need for major expense. We will continue to explore newer technologies and seek ways to cover expenses from a variety of sources.

Budget: Hardware, Other

Hardware Title(s) & Vendor(s): (vendor - Samsung) 10 - TVs; (vendor - Chief) - 10 - Wall mounts; (vendor - Crestron) - 10 Wireless receivers

Hardware Costs: $23,630.00

Other (please explain): Labor to mount TVs on wall estimated

Other Costs: $4,000.00

What is the total budget amount requested?: $27,630.00

Comments: All cost estimates have been received from IT Services. The group study rooms are one of the most used services in the Libraries. During peek times of the year they are all in use for extended periods of time including overnight as finals approach. This is a service that is used by a broad spectrum of students.
