List Departments Benefiting or Affected by this proposal: This proposal would benefit Students in every department. It will be particularly useful for students in CCA and CAS.

Estimated Number of Under-Graduate students affected per year (should be number who will actually use solution, not just who is it available to): 1,500

Estimated Number of Graduate students affected per year (should be number who will actually use solution, not just who is it available to): 100

Describe the problem you are attempting to solve and your approach for solving that problem:

Traditionally the library has provided software titles to students on computers in our buildings. This was done using device based licensing and required students to physically visit our libraries and use our desktops to run the licensed software.

With this project, we are providing several software titles to students for use on their own devices. The software can be checked out from the library website. This supports remote students and provides the added convenience of using software in the working environment of their choice.

We have already piloted this service with 100 Adobe Creative Cloud licenses made available to students at two-week intervals. In the 2019-2020 school year we had about 500 unique users of the system with over 1400 checkouts. During the pilot we regularly had all 100 licenses checked out at once.

We would like to expand this project to include more Adobe CC licenses as well as licenses for Apple App Store software including these Titles:

  • Final Cut Pro
  • Motion
  • Compressor
  • Main Stage
  • Logic Pro

We have already built out the backend capability to share Apple App Store software and Adobe software. We're now requesting the funding to purchase additional licenses to expand the program.

The Adobe licensing terms require us to purchase Creative Cloud student licenses in increments of 25 beyond the first 100 we have already purchased. We'd like to acquire 100 additional licenses to double our capacity.

The Apple volume purchase program provides a 50% discount when purchasing 20 or more copies of a software title, we would like to offer 100 of each title listed above from the App Store for checkout.

How would you describe the innovation and/or the significance of your project:

The software industry is rapidly moving towards "Software as a Service" and this project moves the university library into that paradigm.

By providing software to students for use on their own devices we free them to use it how they like in the workspace of their choosing.

The software checkout model also means that students can request software a la carte and don't need to worry about their own subscriptions to software if they need it for one project or part of a school term.

We presented our pilot at the Academic Library Association of Ohio annual conference https://2020.alaoweb.org/posters/libcal-to-circulate.

How will you assess the success of the project?

We will assess the project using item checkout metrics from Libcal. I have attached the booking records for our Adobe CC pilot from 2019/2020.

Adobe Creative Cloud licenses require an annual subscription fee. Libcal also has an annual fee associated with the number of items available for checkout. We will seek other sources for additional funding in the future.

Please address how, if at all, this project aligns with University, Divisional, Departmental or Center strategic goals:

This project aligns with strategic plan recommendation #13 "Provide necessary resources to Miami students studying abroad or away". We do this by providing software to remote students on their own devices.

This also aligns with the library's strategic goal of expanding and marketing virtual spaces and services to our users.
