Mail Center History

Mail Services started as a one-room operation in Van Voorhis Hall providing administrative and student mail services for the university community. The office moved to several different locations on campus throughout the years, including the basement of Upham Hall, MacMillan Hall, Robertson Hall and Wells Hall before finally moving to Shriver Center.

Through the years the Mail Center provided many services, including Computing Center courier services, lettershop services such as labeling, folding, inserting and automation processing, office supplies, and other courier services for various offices on campus. All student packages and mail were delivered to residence hall mailrooms for distribution by Residence Life staff.

In the post 9/11 era, concerns for secure package handling, the need for accountability and increased package volumes have changed the scope of the Mail Center’s business. The present-day Mail and Package Center has evolved into more of a student mail and package service than administrative mail services as in the past. Package volumes have been increasing an average of 16% per year since FY 2010. During FY 2016 178,000 packages were received and processed just for students. During that same period, 26% of all package volume occurred in the first three weeks of the fall and spring semesters.

In August 2017, the Mail and Package Center will begin using 1900 intelligent lockers for package pickup. This is the largest installation of lockers at a college or university in the United States. The lockers provide students immediate access to their packages, allowing them to pick up on their time schedule with 24/7 access and avoid the need to stand in long lines at a pickup window.
