What is a Public Ivy?

The term Public Ivy first appeared as the title of a 1985 book by Richard Moll. The book, Public Ivys: A Guide to America's Best Public Undergraduate Colleges and Universities, describes eight universities that provide “an Ivy League collegiate experience at a public school price." Public Ivies are considered, according to theJournal of Blacks in Higher Education, to be capable of "successfully competing with the Ivy League schools in academic rigor...” Miami is among these original eight public ivys, the only university from Ohio so designated, and is later included in Greene’s Guides “The Public Ivies: America’s Flagship Public Universities, which expanded the number of universities distinguished by region.

National measures of quality support Miami’s status as a Public Ivy with a return on (tuition) investment that is #1 in Ohio and among the top tier nationally according to SmartMoney.com, Payscale.com and Forbes magazine. According to a SmartMoney.com survey that divided alumni’s reported median salaries by the tuition and fees they paid, Miami ranks eleventh in the nation, and first in Ohio. Miami graduates reported a starting median salary at $46,600 and a median mid-career salary at $85,500 in a Payscale.com survey.

Further confirmation of Miami's quality of student support is affirmed in Student Success in College: Creating Conditions that Matter (2010), which identifies what twenty distinct, strong-performing universities and colleges – Miami included – are doing to promote student success. The book "offers a clear view of what an educationally effective college or university looks like in a complex and challenging higher education environment..."

The authors are George Kuh, Jillian Kinzie, John Schuh, Elizabeth Whitt and Associates.
