Miami's Undergraduate Research Committee members will review applications and announce decisions in early May. Reviewers will employ the same evaluation criteria stipulated in the URA program guidelines. Two $5,000.00 awards will be given. Funds from the Cancer Research Award (CRA) program are to be used to conduct a yearlong research study. Either an individual student or a student team may apply. Note: CRA and URA awards cannot be held simultaneously, either as an individual or as a member of the team.

Student Eligibility and Responsibilities

All enrolled full-time undergraduate students working on a faculty-mentored research project focused on cancer research who have at GPA of at least 2.0 are eligible to apply. A student may receive only one award from this program. Although projects must be initiated and developed by student applicant(s), a faculty member must also sponsor each project. The student is responsible for: 1) finding a faculty sponsor, 2) writing the proposal 3) arranging for faculty sponsor proposal review (well in advance of the deadline), 4) ensuring the sponsor's final review occurs at least two weeks before the submission deadline, 5) obtaining the required faculty sponsor signature on the application, and 6)  assembling the application and 7) electronically submitting the proposal.

Faculty Sponsor Responsibility

Each project (proposed by an individual or by a student team) must be endorsed by a faculty sponsor who will certify the project is worth doing, has educational value to the student(s) and can be accomplished in the proposed time frame and who ensures the student researchers adherence with compliance committee requirements prior to starting the project. Faculty sponsor will be the award financial manager.

Application Process

Applications are submitted one semester before the proposed conduct of the research project.  Students may submit individual projects or team1 projects with a $5,000.00 budget. Each individual student project or team project must be endorsed by a Miami faculty sponsor who certifies that the project is worth doing, has educational value to the student(s) and can be accomplished in the proposed time frame.

The student should complete application, write the research proposal, obtain the required faculty sponsor's signature and submit the application online by the spring deadline. Undergraduate Research Coordinator, who provides administrative support for this University Senate Program, will transmit the application to the URA committee for evaluation.

Read the URA program guidelines for details about proposal headings and document page order. Your single pdf file MUST include: Section I Endorsement Sheet (2 pages), Section II Cover Page, Section III Introduction, Section IV (budget and budget justification), Section V (Literature Cited). To upload a single pdf file of your application and click the Submit button on the last page of this form. Use a file name format like this: cancer-research-18-app-[your Miami unique id].pdf
