Diversity Statement

The Miami University Student Counseling Service is deeply committed to the appreciation and celebration of diversity. We value students of all identities, including but not limited to those based on race, ethnicity, sex, gender expression, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, nationality and citizenship status, age, body shape/size, religion, spirituality, ability, and ideology. We recognize the effects that discrimination, prejudice, and systemic issues of power and privilege can have on the life of a student. We strive to create a warm and welcoming environment where all students can feel supported, nurtured, and affirmed. As mental health professionals, we are trained to provide multiculturally informed services that meet the needs of all students while also honoring the uniqueness of each individual. All counseling services are confidential and are not part of the student academic record.

SCS Statement Regarding the Recent Events in Charlottesville, VA

Miami University’s Student Counseling Service (SCS) is deeply saddened by the recent racism and bigotry demonstrated by White supremacist hate groups in Charlottesville, VA, as well as the subsequent violence that resulted in numerous injuries and the senseless loss of a life.  SCS is committed to inclusive excellence and strongly denounces racism, discrimination, oppression, and violence in its many forms.   As college mental health professionals, we know that hatred, bigotry, and the perpetration of racial and bias-motivated violence are harmful to everyone’s mental and physical health, including those who espouse it and especially those who are hurt by it.

The Student Counseling Service welcomes any Miami student who is interested in receiving emotional support following these events.  Students can speak with a mental health professional by contacting the Student Counseling Service at 513-529-4634, Monday-Friday, between 8:00am-5:00pm.
