3-2-17 Weekly Three

First, several faculty and staff have requested information about Miami’s Alcohol Abuse Prevention and Education programs. A summary of those programs, prepared by Vice President for Student Affairs Jayne Brownell, is attached.

Below is this week’s Three:

15-25-30 Recognition – Congratulations to our colleagues recognized for years of University service during last week’s 15-25-30 Years of Service Reception. In all, 141 staff and faculty were recognized - 76 from the Academic Affairs division. Thank you for your dedicated service to Miami and our students.

Inclusion Series – The second Inclusion Series interactive session will be held on Tuesday, March 14, 4:30-5:45 p.m. in the Shriver Dolibois Rooms. The panel will open a dialogue around the question, “Am I a Racist? An Exploration of Race and Racial Identity in Today’s Political Atmosphere,” and includes Richard Moore (Biology), Scott Brown (Sociology and Gerontology), Othello Harris (Sociology and Gerontology), Gwen Etter-Lewis (English & Global and Intercultural Studies), Linda Marchant (Anthropology), Helane Androne (English & Languages, Literatures, and Writing), and Rodney Coates (Black World Studies).

The Inclusion Series discussion will complement that evening’s Janus Forum scheduled for 6:00 p.m. in the Armstrong Wilks Theater. The Janus Forum, “Can Both Black and Blue Lives Matter?” features panelists Dawn Porter, Founder of Trilogy Films and Director/Producer of Spies of Mississippi and Gideon’s Army, and Heather MacDonald, a Thomas W. Smith Fellow at the Manhattan Institute and a contributing editor of City Journal. Please note, tickets for the Janus Forum are required and available, free, through the Miami University Box Office.

I hope you will plan to attend both events and that you will encourage students to attend as well.

Reminder – Nominations for the Provost’s Student Academic Achievement Awards (PSAAA) are due to department chairs/program directors by Monday, March 6, 2017. These annual awards recognize undergraduate students (must be juniors at the time of nomination) who have achieved an outstanding record of academic excellence. Additional detail and nomination forms can be found here.

Until next week,
Phyllis
