11-1-18 Weekly Three

Colleagues,

Student Inter-Disciplinary Engagement Awards (IDEA) Awards – The deadline for submission of student applications for IDEA awards, sponsored by the Offices of Liberal Education, and Research for Undergraduates, has been extended to November 9, 2018. The IDEA awards (up to $500) provide teams of undergraduate students with opportunities to collaborate with faculty across disciplinary boundaries, and to intentionally apply knowledge from different fields to address a research question. Please encourage your students to submit proposals for the IDEA interdisciplinary research projects.

Leadership Training for Department Chairs – Associate Provost Jeffrey Wanko is leading our office’s efforts to develop comprehensive and consistent leadership training for department chairs and their staff. Training will include information about the University’s policies and procedures in general and specific details about Miami’s academic structure, hiring guidelines, academic integrity, diversity and inclusion goals, governance and other relevant topics.

Please contact Dr. Wanko at wankojj@MiamiOH.edu for more information or to schedule training for your department. Thank you, Dr. Wanko, for your efforts in developing and implementing this important training process.

Reminders:

  • The Annual Budget Presentation –Sr. Vice President for Finance and Business Services David Creamer and I will present the Annual Oxford Campus Budget Symposium during an open meeting of University Senate on Monday, November 5 (3:50 - 5:00 pm) 102 Benton Hall. (The Regionals’ annual budget presentations will be scheduled during spring semester, 2019.
  • Open Educational Resources (OER) Workshop – OER can help alleviate the burden of textbook costs for students and provide faculty with course content that can be customized for their courses. Faculty are eligible for a $200 stipend to support their efforts in exploring open textbook options for one of their courses, and can apply to attend the OER Explore Workshop to be held on Friday, November 16 (2 - 4:00 pm) 303 King Library. Capacity is limited and preference is based on OER textbook subject area availability.
  • Partnerships – If you are considering a collaborative partnership with an external educational, public or private organization, please work with Miami’s Partnership Office to take advantage of the support and guidance you will need for a productive and mutually beneficial partnership. To find out more about what opportunities you might propose or that might facilitate a collaborative academic partnership, or to discuss a current partnership you are involved in, please contact Associate Provost for Research and Scholarship, Jim Oris, at orisjt@MiamiOH.edu.

Until next week,

Phyllis
