Urban Leadership Internship Program (ULIP)

The Urban Leadership Internship Program is an integrated educational internship program that combines professional practice, service-volunteer work, and urban exploration in the Dayton community. Only University Honors Program students in the second and third year are eligible to apply for the program. Accepted students to the ULIP will enjoy the following:

  • A total stipend of $5,000 for those students choosing to live alone or with other ULIP interns. A reduced stipend of $3,500 is offered to those who commute from home.
  • A ten-week full-time summer internship consisting of a four day work week.
  • Participating with other ULIP interns in weekly service project work on Fridays.

To experience the urban immersion by working, living, and exploring the Dayton community!

Program Commitments by the accepted student

  • Successful completion of the HON 290G spring semester eight-week sprint course and attend all class sessions on the Oxford campus.
  • Participation in the Alternative Spring Break, Sunday-Tuesday, March 22-24, 2020.
  • Successful completion of the ten-week full-time internship during the summer of 2020.
  • Successful completion of the weekly group service projects.
  • Successful completion of the HON 340 summer online course.

Timeline for Academic Year 2019-2020

  • November Information Sessions for Miami students.
  • December 6 | Application Deadline for Miami students: hard copy 5:00pm, online submittal 11:59pm.
  • December 12| Agencies are provided pre-selected student applicants for review.
  • January 10 | Decision emails from ULIP to Miami students who applied to the program.
  • March 22–24 | Alternative Spring Break for ULIP students.
  • March 23–24 | Discover Dayton! ULIP students and Agencies meet & greet and tour of facilities.
  • March 9–May 15 | Accepted students attend Miami’s HON 290G pre-internship sprint course.
  • May 19–August 7 | Date range of 10 week summer internship and Miami’s HON 340 online course.

Application and Review

The Urban Leadership Internship Program is open to University Honors Program students in their second or third year. Students from all majors are encouraged to apply.  In order to participate in the ULIP, students must commit to all requirements of the program as listed above.

  • Personal Statement- Why ULIP and working in an urban environment with non-profit agencies
  • Letter of Recommendation

Students are selected based on:

  • Application materials
  • Academic performance
  • Interest in serving urban communities
  • Motivation, self-directed learning, and leadership experience

ULIP specifically partners with internship employers who can provide a meaningful work experience, appropriate supervision, and who are involved in the urban neighborhood in which they are located.
