What is Public Health?

The Public Health major at Miami University is a field of study focused on preventing illness and promoting health in individuals, communities, and society as a whole; thus encouraging individuals and groups of people to improve and/or maintain their health status. Public Health focuses on health, not disease—although each are discussed in light of the other in order to generate critical thinking, reasoning, and other basic principles of liberal education and lifelong learning

What are the features of Miami’s program?

Choice of emphasis

This program builds on the university's strengths in 4 areas:

  • human disease & epidemiology
  • health policy & administration
  • public health promotion
  • behavioral public health

Students will choose a concentration in one of these specialty areas, as well as complete a core curriculum covering the fundamental elements of public health. These curricula prepare students for either graduate school or employment in the field.

Interdisciplinary approach

The major is unique in that it is housed in both the College of Education, Health and Society (CEHS) and the College of Arts and Science (CAS).  As such, a wide range of departments contribute to the curriculum.

What are the special admission requirements, if any?

There are no additional admission requirements for this program.

What courses would I take?

The Public Health curriculum is interdisciplinary in nature, focusing on the sociology, history, pedagogy, psychology, physiology, statistics, and biology of health. Depending upon the concentration, students gain a greater depth of understanding of related areas, such as psychology, sociology, and gerontology (study of the elderly); health disparities and global health, human diseases and epidemiology; and health policy and administration.
