Meet Your Advisors

Theodore Peters (Senior Assistant Dean)

photo of Theodore PetersTed is the lead divisional advisor and point person for student academic services in the College of Arts & Science. As such, he serves as an advocate for students and coordinates initiatives aimed at improving the student experience with regard to academic advising. Ted directs the undergraduate Academic Advising Office & University Studies Office and often represents the College of Arts & Science across the university. He began his professional career at Miami in 1998 as a visiting instructor in English, then became the First-Year Academic Advisor in charge of creating the Celebrate the Arts living-learning community. After a year of living and working as a photographer in San Diego, Ted returned to Miami in 2001 working in the CAS Academic Advising Office. In 2011 he was promoted to Senior Academic Advisor and in 2015 to Assistant Dean. Ted completed his undergraduate work at Miami University - Literature and Creative Writing, with English honors – and his master's degree at The University of London, King's College, specializing in 19th century British poetry.

Christa Branson (Associate Director of Academic Advising)

photo of Christa BransonChrista came to Miami as a student in 1992, and worked full-time at the Hamilton campus while earning a Bachelor of Arts in sociology. In 2002 Christa resumed her role as a Miami student and earned a Master of Science in college student personnel. She returned to full-time employment in 2004 as coordinator of academic advising for the Office of Residence Life and New Student Programs. Christa joined the CAS academic advising staff in 2006, was promoted to Senior Academic Advisor in 2015, and assumed the role of Associate Director in September 2022.


Erin Brown (Academic Advisor)

photo of Erin BrownErin earned his Bachelor of Science in Human Development and Family Studies and a minor in Sociology with Kent State University in 2018. He continued on to obtain his Master's of Education in College Student Personnel from Ohio University and graduated in May 2020. As Erin worked to earn his M.Ed he worked as a graduate assistant in the Allen Student Advising Center within University College. Erin joined the CAS advising team mid-September of 2020.


Charlie Chen (Academic Advisor)

a photo of Charlie ChenCharlie earned a Bachelor of Arts in East Asian Languages and Cultures and a Master of Science in Kinesiology and Health from Miami University in 2016 and 2018, respectively. In his time as a Miami student, Charlie worked as an Academic Support Graduate Assistant in the Bernard B. Rinella Learning Center, volunteered in the Office of Ethics and Student Conflict Resolution (now the Office of Community Standards), conducted research on university population alcohol and drug use, and was a Resident Assistant. Prior to his return to Miami University, Charlie worked as a Residence Hall Director in the SUNY system and as a Sales and Service Consultant in the private sector. Charlie joined the CAS advising team in January 2022.


Madeleine Hood (Academic Advisor)

a photo of Madeleine HoodMadeleine graduated from North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University, also known as A&T in Greensboro, North Carolina with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology in 2015. She continued her educational journey at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia, where she earned her Master of Public Administration degree in 2017. During her time at Old Dominion University, she worked as a graduate assistant in the Strome College of Business where she worked in both the Dean’s office and academic advising office. Her focus was working with incoming freshmen as well as transfer students. Madeleine joined the CAS advising team in August 2021.

 

Virginia "Ginny" Lubanski (Assistant Director of Academic Advising)

a photo of Virginia LubanskiGinny graduated from Ohio Dominican University in Columbus, Ohio with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration in 2011. She continued her education at Miami University and earned a Master of Science degree in Student Affairs and Higher Education in 2015. Ginny joined the CAS academic advising team in July 2015. She was promoted in December 2021 to Senior Academic Advisor, and assumed the role of Assistant Director of Academic Advising in September 2022.


Kristan Kanorr (Assistant Director of Academic Advising)

photo of Kristan KanorrKristan earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Sport Administration with a minor in Marketing in 2008 followed by a Master of Arts degree in Student Affairs Administration in Higher Education with a minor in Executive Development for Public Service in 2010, both from Ball State University. She started her career in higher education at Indiana University East in 2012, working in a variety of areas including: academic advising for exploratory students, first-year student success coaching, student-athlete academic progress, orientation planning, and instructing first-year seminar. Kristan joined the CAS academic advising staff in March of 2015. She was promoted in December 2021 to Senior Academic Advisor, and assumed the role of Assistant Director of Academic Advising in September 2022.


Kurt Olausen (Academic Advisor)

photo of Kurt OlausenKurt earned his B.A. from Dickinson College with majors in German and Italian Studies,  in 1990, his M.Ed. in Counselor Education from the University of Virginia, in 1994, and his Ed.D. in Higher Education Administration from North Carolina State University, in 2007. Prior to coming to Miami, he worked in Study Abroad at Eastern Illinois University, the University of Cincinnati, Duke University, and James Madison University. He has also taught ESL at the University of Cincinnati and Berlitz Language Services.


Joe Sacco (Academic Advisor)

photo of Joe SaccoJoe completed his undergraduate education at Thomas More College (now University) in Crestview Hills, KY where he obtained a B.A. in Secondary Education/Social Studies in 2003. He also earned minors in both History and Philosophy. He went on to serve as a Graduate Teaching Assistant at Kent State where he earned his M.A. degree in Philosophy (specializing in Ethics) in 2007. Joe has over a decade of experience in higher education as both an instructor and advisor. Prior to coming to Miami, Joe served as an Academic Advisor at Cincinnati State for six years. He joined the CAS advising team in June 2019.


Don Sebera (Academic Advisor)

photo of Don SeberaDon graduated from Ohio University, earning both a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and a Master's Degree in Counseling. He has worked in the community college and university environments as an academic advisor; as well as serving as the Director of a college disability services office, and teaching high school special education. Don joined the CAS office in September of 2018.

 


Michael Swain (Academic Advisor)

photo of Michael SwainMichael earned his B.A. from Indiana University (Indianapolis – IUPUI) with a major in History in 1988, while working full-time for the Indiana state government. He completed his M.A. in Communications (Journalism & Public Relations) at Ball State University in 1994. In 1996 he began work with the Purdue University College of Technology and served for 16 years overseeing one-stop admissions, academic advising, and student services at the Richmond, IN location. In 2012, he was named director of the Purdue University Polytechnic Institute – Richmond and oversaw the transformation of the location, adding new degree programs, faculty, staff, facilities, and equipment. He retired from that position in 2021. Michael joined the CAS advising team in January 2022.
