Advising Appointments

First-Year Students - Meetings are to be with your assigned advisor.

Sophomore, Junior, and Senior Students - You first should have connected with your assigned faculty advisor. But, if you have questions that could not be answered by your faculty advisor, you should schedule an appointment with CAS Advising.

Appointments will be held either in-person or virtually through Google Chat on the Eastern Time Zone.

In Navigate, please select the modality that fits your preference for the appointment.

Drop-In Advising

10 minutes in length

Winter/Spring Drop-ins:

  • January 18 & 19 (2:00 - 4:00 pm)
  • January 24 to 28 (8:00 am - 4:00 pm)
  • January 31 to May 13 (Monday-Thursday, 2:00 - 4:30 pm)
  • No drop-ins: March 21-25 (spring break)

Meetings are with CAS Advisor in the cognate area of major; University Studies will be seen by the first available CAS advisor.

Drop-ins will be held virtually.

Please be aware that during peak times, there could be a significant wait time or you may be asked to attend drop-ins another day depending on the student volume in the waiting queue.

Advisors in 146 Upham use Navigate to schedule advising appointments. Please see the instructions below.

  • CAS advisors directly advise all first-year CAS students, but will also advise sophomore, junior, and senior CAS students as needed.
  • Non-CAS majors should plan to attend daily drop-in hours.
  • Plan ahead! During peak advising times (October-November, March-April, and June), students should plan to schedule an advising appointment two or more weeks in advance.
NOTE: Do not attempt to check in to drop-in advising before they are available at 2:00pm EST
Checking-In means that you are in the queue, and you should expect to receive contact from an advisor via chat, email, phone, or Navigate.

Scheduling An Appointment

We offer appointments weekdays from 9:00 am – 4:30 pm throughout the semester, but our busiest times are the month before and the month of registration. Please plan ahead, as schedules fill up quickly.

Instructions for upper-class students wanting to make an appointment with a CAS Advisor:

To schedule an appointment, visit MiamiOH.edu/Navigate:

  1. Choose "Get Assistance," in the top right corner
  2. Under Appointment Type you would like “Advising & Academic Support” should be pre-selected for you.
  3. Under Service, find "Oxford - College of Arts and Science Appointment and select "CAS - General Advising."
  4. Under Pick a Date, select the date that works best in your schedule. Then choose "Find Available Time."
  5. Select your appointment:
    1. Select a specific advisor and see their available times to choose from (click on “View individual availabilities” under the College of Arts & Science Academic Advising heading).
      or
    2. Choose a specific time slot and the system will select an advisor who is available at that time.
  6. On the Review Appointment Details and Confirm page please complete the following:
    1. In the How would you like to meet? box, please indicate an in-person or online meeting. (Please only select phone as a last option)
    2. In the Would you like to share anything else? box, please include the reason for your appointment or what you want to talk about (it helps your advisor prepare).
  7. Choose "Schedule" to finalize the appointment.

After scheduling the appointment, you will receive an email confirmation that will include additional information and instructions.

Instructions for first-year students wanting to make an appointment with their assigned advisor:

To schedule an appointment, visit MiamiOH.edu/Navigate:

  1. Choose "Get Assistance" in the top right corner.
  2. Under Appointment Type select “Advising & Academic Support”
  3. Under Service, find "Oxford - College of Arts and Science Appointment and select "Appointment w/ Advisor."
  4. Under Pick a Date, select the date that works best in your schedule. Then choose "Find Available Time."
  5. On the New Appointment page you should see only your assigned advisor’s open appointment times. Select one that works with your schedule.
  6. On the Review Appointment Details and Confirm page please complete the following:
    1. In the How would you like to meet? box, please indicate an in-person or online meeting. (Please only select phone as a last option)
    2. In the Would you like to share anything else? box, please include the reason for your appointment or what you want to talk about (it helps your advisor prepare).
  7. Choose "Schedule" to finalize the appointment.

Checking In for Drop-In Advising

Winter/Spring Drop-in Dates:

  • January 18 & 19 (2:00 - 4:00 pm)
  • January 24 to 28 (8:00 am - 4:00 pm)
  • January 31 to May 13 (Monday-Thursday, 2:00 - 4:30 pm)
  • No drop-ins: March 21-25 (spring break)

Drop-in advising is available virtually from 2:00-4:30, Monday through Thursday during the fall and spring semesters. 

  • Drop-in hours are intended to address scheduling questions and immediate concerns. If you wish to discuss bigger-picture topics or plan for future semesters, you must schedule an appointment.
  • Drop-in meetings will be initiated via Google Chat, and then conducted using Google Meet. Please let us know if you need to use a different platform.
  • There are typically multiple advisors available during drop-in advising and students are met with on a first-come, first-served basis. Wait times may vary, but during peak hours can exceed 45 minutes.

To sign up:

  1. Login to Navigate.
  2. Choose "Get Assistance," located in the top right-hand corner.
  3. Under Other Options, select "View Drop-In Times".
  4. Under the Appointment type “Arts & Science Drop-Ins should be pre-selected.
  5. Under Service, there should be only one option to select and it is related to the area of you major.
  6. Then click the "Find Available Time" button.
  7. On the next page, ignore the filters on the left, and select the "College of Arts & Science" Academic Advising" link to the right.
  8. Choose the "Check-in with first available" button.
  9. The next screen will indicate that you have successfully checked in, which means you have been added to the queue of students waiting for the next available advisor.
  10. Launch Google Chat (chat.google.com) and an academic advisor will message you there. Please continue to have this window active so you do not miss this message.

If you need to cancel your drop-in:

  1. Return to your Navigate Student Homepage (choose the Home/House icon).
  2. Choose the red Check Out box if you need to cancel your drop-in before attending.
  3. A confirmation message will come up and you can click Okay, got It."

Cancelling/Rescheduling an Appointment

To cancel an appointment, go to MiamiOH.edu/Navigate:

  1. On the right side of the screen, there is a section titled Upcoming Appointments, and you should see your appointment listed there. Choose CAS - General Advising to access the appointment information.
  2. In the bottom, left of the Manage Appointment dialogue box, choose Cancel My Attendance.
  3. Select a reason from the drop-down and enter any comments.
  4. Choose Mark As Cancelled.

To reschedule, follow the instructions for cancelling an appointment, then schedule a new appointment using the instructions above.

Google Chat Instructions for Speaking with an Advisor:

  1. Go to  https://chat.google.com/.
  2. Choose "Sign In" to login to your Miami Gmail account.
  3. You will receive an invitation to chat from the advisor.
  4. Open the invitation and select "Accept"
  5. Once accepted, the advisor will request that you join a video call via the chat.
  6. Open the video call by clicking on the "Join Video Meeting" icon.
  7. Choose "Join Now" to begin the call from the "Ready to Join?" menu.
  8. You will need to "Allow" Google Chat to access your microphone and camera.
