Positive Transformations for Ohio Schools: Building Statewide Positive Supports

Project At-A-Glance

  • funded by U.S. Department of Education
  • 5-year time period – October 1, 2014 through September 30, 2019
  • total amount funded = $743,823
  • partners – Ohio Department of Education, the Ohio PBIS [Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports] Network, and the Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services

The Ohio Department of Education (ODE), Office for Exceptional Children (OEC) is committed to improving the climate of Ohio schools; reducing harassment, intimidation, and bullying (HIB); and ensuring that our schools remain safe. Together with our committed partners, the Center for School Based Mental Health Programs (CSBMHP) and the Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (MHAS), we are committed to transforming our systems of school- and community-based support for all students, regardless of their racial, cultural or disability status.

We will enhance our multi-tiered system of supports (MTSS) to promote personal, social, behavioral and academic success by utilizing the PBIS materials and consultative resources from the Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP) Technical Assistance Center for Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS). We intend to widely expand multi-tiered systems of behavioral support and align those intervention efforts with the academic side of the 3-tiered pyramid to develop cohesive, team-based systems of supports for students. Additionally, working with our numerous partners, we seek to develop a coordinated system of safe schools and prototypes for interfacing community-based supports with our schools.

Project Goals

We have established 5 Global Goals for our project which include the following:

  • improving the capacity of state educational agencies (SEA) personnel to assist local educational agencies (LEA) implementation of PBIS by providing coordinated resources and support
  • developing a group of trained and experienced professionals to provide training and coaching to LEAs on PBIS implementation
  • enhancing LEA capacity to implement and sustain PBIS by providing embedded PBIS professional development and technical assistance opportunities
  • developing curriculum materials, training protocols, and evaluation procedures for a motivation and engagement-focused PBIS to be pilot ready for year two
  • implementing an evidence-based system for evaluating the fidelity and outcomes of PBIS, as well as recognizing exemplar PBIS schools
