Scripps Gerontology Center Executive Director Katy Abbott's article Applying Agile Methodology to Re-Engineer the Delivery of Person-Centered Care in a Nursing Home: A Case Study, is featured in the September 2022 issue of JAMDA, the official journal of AMDA - The Society for Post-Acute and Long-Term Care Medicine. JAMDA is a peer-reviewed publication that offers research and information directly applicable to healthcare professionals, policy-makers, organizational leaders, educators, and advocates.

"In terms of dissemination, JAMDA is the perfect venue for our work because it gets the information to the audience who can implement our recommendations."

Abbott's study focuses on nursing home residents' preferences for their daily care activities, allowing providers to implement assessment tools to promote person-centered care (PCC). The manuscript details how the Agile methodology can aid nursing home staff in knowing and honoring residents’ preferences, using a new way of thinking. Agile processes involve do-study-act cycles to break down the processes, prioritization, and implementation of an iterative plan. In the manuscript, Abbott’s team shares how Agile thinking has assisted staff in utilizing residents' preferences to increase social contact, comfort, and belonging.

"Person-centered care has been around for decades, but no one seems to be able to get there. To me, this manuscript is a success story of integrating Agile principles in the process of care, which is an area where we haven't seen as much progress as we would like."
