Miami University Grants
Jack and Karen Horrell Internship Award
Jack (BS in Business, 1973) and Karen Horrell have generously established a $1,000 award for a Miami student who interns this summer in a non-paying internship with a nonprofit/social welfare/social service organization.
Application Process
Interested students should submit:
- Resume
- Statement of Intent (i.e., why you chose this particular internship)
- Letter from a nonprofit confirming your internship and that it is unpaid
- Complete application is due by mid-April.

$500 will be awarded prior to beginning your internship with proof of internship, and $500 will be awarded after proof of the successful completion of the internship (i.e., letter from nonprofit organization).
Provost’s Student Academic Achievement Award
This award is for juniors that have completed a minimum of 75 credits and have established an outstanding record of academic achievement with contributions to the department, school, or campus. Students can nominate themselves through a department, or faculty can nominate a student. Campus Deadline: middle of spring semester.

President's Distinguished Service Award
This award is presented students whose service as a university employee, through campus life, community service, or intellectual and cultural leadership has been truly extraordinary. Letters of recommendation must accompany each nomination detailing the student's contributions.

Employee Service Leadership Award
This award recognizes employees from all class years. Students receive a dated service pin at a ceremony hosted by the Vice President for Finance and Business Services and Treasurer, Mr. David Creamer.

Senior Service Leadership Award
Students receive a special medal, to be worn on their graduation robes, at a special ceremony hosted by the president and vice presidents of the university. Recipients should be graduating during the class year they are recognized (or from the previous December).

Scholarship to Provide Underrepresented Undergraduates in the Life Sciences
This scholarship is for African Americans, Alaska Natives, American Indians, Hispanic Americans, Native Pacific Islanders, and persons with disabilities. Preference is for first-years or first-year majors in Botany, Chemistry and Biochemistry, Microbiology, and Zoology.

The Undergraduate Presentation Awards
This award is for any undergraduate student at Miami that conducted independent research or other independent creative activity under the guidance of Miami faculty/advisors. This award is to help students present their results at conferences as the primary author.
Undergraduate Presentation Awards
The Undergraduate Research Award Program
This award is for full-time undergraduate students in all disciplines that have a GPA of at least 2.0. The project must be sponsored by a faculty member. This award is to encourage students to initiate small-scale, independent research projects. Campus Deadline: application due in March of spring semester and project is to be started in the following fall.

Undergraduate Summer Scholars Program
Option A-Traditional Project
Option B-Study Abroad
This program is for undergraduate students to complete a USS project while studying abroad in a first summer session program related to the project, up to 6 credit hours. The project has to be under supervision by a Miami faculty mentor. The student needs to dedicate nine weeks, (don’t have to be consecutive), to the research project. The project has to be completed within the time from May to February, the following year.

External Grants
Astronaut Scholarship
This scholarship is for Engineering, natural or applied science, and mathematic students. Students who are intending to pursue professional medicine are not eligible. Those intending to perform biomedical research are eligible. Requirements are: U.S. citizen, High GPA, experience with lab and research work, and commitment to continue as a researcher. Campus Deadline: End of fall semester.

Beinecke Scholarship
This scholarship is for juniors who plan to enter a Master’s or a Doctoral program in the arts, humanities, or social science. However, if planning on pursuing neuroscience or mathematics, do not apply. It is required to be U.S. citizen, or a U.S national from American Samoa or the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. Also, it is required to have documented history of receiving need-base financial aid during undergraduate years.

British Marshall Scholarship
This scholarship is for graduating students from any field of study that intend to pursue graduate school in the UK at one of the Marshall institutions. Requirements: a US citizen, 3.7 GPA or better, outstanding leadership in field of study, and outstanding academic performance.

Carnegie Junior Fellows Program
This one-year fellowship is for graduating seniors and individuals who have graduated during the past academic year. It is open to all majors, however must have knowledge of China, nonproliferation, Democracy and rule of law, energy and climate, international economics, trade, equity and development, Russia and Eurasia, Middle East, or US role in the world. Those receiving fellowship positions will serve as research assistants. Requirements are eligibility to work in the U.S, outstanding academic performance, and strong writing ability.

Charles B. Rangel International Affairs Graduate Fellowship
The Charles B. Rangel International Affairs Graduate Fellowship funds young people interested in careers of international service. The program provides benefits valued at up to $90,000 over two years toward a two-year master's degree, arranges internships on Capitol Hill and at U.S. embassies, and provides professional development and support activities for those who want to become Foreign Services Officers in the U.S. Department of State. Fellows may use the fellowship to attend a two-year master's program in a U.S. institution to study an area of relevance to the Foreign Service, including international relations, public policy, public administration, languages, or business administration. Upon successful completion of the two-year fellowship, Fellows enter the Foreign Service of the U.S. Department of State. Applicants must be college seniors or graduates looking to start two-year graduate programs in fall, have GPAs of at least 3.2, and be U.S. citizens. The program welcomes applications from those with any undergraduate major and encourages applications from members of minority groups historically underrepresented in the Foreign Service and those with financial need. The application deadline is usually at the beginning of the year. The Program is funded by the U.S. Department of State and managed by Howard University.

Fulbright Program
This grant is for graduating students that want to do research is a foreign country. This grant includes round-trip transportation to the host country, maintenance for the academic year, based on living cost of host country, and limited health benefits. Requirements: U.S. citizen, strong academic record, great proposal for research in the host country, Satisfactory Certificate of Health from a physician, and preference will be given to those who have not resided or studied in the host country for more than 6 months.

This scholarship is from graduating students planning to pursue any graduate program at partner universities in Ireland. Requirements: US citizen, above 18 years of age but under 30, academic excellence, outstanding record of leadership.

Goldman Memorial Prize
This award is for a graduating senior that has an outstanding academic record, has done independent work, and shown scholarly or creative initiative in some field of study or the arts. All fields of study are welcome to apply.

Goldwater Scholarship
This scholarship is for sophomores or juniors who intend to pursue careers in mathematics, the natural sciences, or engineering. Students need to be US citizens or a permanent resident (however permanent residents must include a letter of the nominee’s intent to obtain US citizenship and a photocopy of the Permanent Resident Card). Extensive research experience and academic excellence is essential.

Jack Kent Cooke Graduate Scholarship
This scholarship is only for students who received a Jack Cooke Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship or participated in the Jack Cooke Young Scholars Program. These students should be planning to attend graduate school. Requirements: need a 3.5 or higher GPA (based on a 4.0 scale), great writing ability, and extraordinary record of achievement within undergraduate field of study. This is also open to all fields of study.

James Madison Graduate Fellowship
The fellowship is for a graduating student who studied social science and secondary education. Must intend to attend graduate school leading to a master’s degree in one of the following areas: Master of Arts in American history or political science, Master of Arts in teaching concentrating on either American Constitutional history or American government, or Master of Education with a concentration in American history or politics.
The student is expected to pursue a career as a secondary school teacher of American government or history. Also, each fellow is to attend a four-week summer institute held in July at Georgetown University and the fees are included in the fellowship award. Requirements: need to be a US citizen or US National, have a Bachelor’s degree by August 31 of the year applying.

Morris K Udall Scholarship
This scholarship is open to sophomores and juniors in all fields, but need to have coursework in environmental and/or public policy, environmental studies or science, or Native American studies. Need to be committed to a career related to the environment, OR to a career in tribal public policy OR Native American health care (only Native Americans and Alaska Natives are eligible to apply in tribal public policy or Native American health care). Requirements: Need at least a 3.0 GPA, a to be a US Citizen, US national, or US permanent resident, and demonstrated commitment to environmental or natural resource issues; or tribal public policy or Native American health care.

NSEP Boren Scholarship
This scholarship is for a student who is a High School graduate, has their GED, or in a US post-secondary school that is pursuing study abroad somewhere other than Western Europe, Australia, New Zealand, or Canada. It is open to all fields of study but the student must have interest in foreign language and culture outside of the excluded locations. Requirements: US citizen, and interest in a career that will contribute in US national security (broadly defined).

Rhodes Scholarship
This scholarship is for graduating students from any field of study that would like to further study at Oxford University. Requirements: US citizen, at least 18 years of age but under 24, proven intellectual and academic achievement, and be intellectually, morally, and physically capable of leadership in any field.

Truman Scholarship
This scholarship is open to juniors in any field of study that leads to a career in the government, non-profit sector, or other areas of public service. Requirements: extensive and sustained record of public or community service, record of leadership and communication skills, excellent academic performance, and the desire to influence public policy or education.
