Miami University Americans in Berlin

Berlin has been one of the  primary destinations for Americans artists, entertainers, authors, and enterpreneurs from 1920s to the present moment. Particulaly intensive, contested and influencial has been the encounter between Germans and Americans in Berlin in the aftermath of World War II and during the Cold War (1945-1989), as the city became the center of the conflict between two political systems. In Berlin, students will explore the various cultural, political, and economic dimensions of this long-lasting relationship, and will visit numerous sites dedicated to the research and preservation of cultural memory.

Miami University in Oman and UAE (Interdepartemental)

Since the discovery of oil in early twentieth-century Arabia, the Sultanate of Oman and the United Arab Emirates have seen remarkable religious, cultural, political, and economic shifts. Now – with the rise of green energy and the transition from petroleum economies – what will the story of the UAE and Oman be?

Through site visits, conversations with experts and locals, as well as personal experiences, you will evaluate the role of Islam and Arab culture in the development and transformation of business in Oman and UAE. Interested in foreign affairs, human cultures, global politics, and global economies? Change your view, set your resumé apart, with the skills needed to succeed in the global economy.  No Arabic or Middle East Studies required!

Faculty-Led Summer Term Programs

Miami University Intensive German Summer

The exhilaration of total immersion in a foreign language is combined in this seven-week program with the thrill of living and traveling in Europe. The intensive workshop is designed to give students the opportunity to complete one full year of college German at the intermediate (200) or the advanced (300) level. Students completing the intermediate level, satisfying the Miami College of Arts & Science language requirement, are prepared to enter advanced German. Those completing the third-year course may continue to take courses at the advanced level, having earned credit toward either a minor or major in German. This Program fulfills the Miami Plan Global Perspectives requirement. 300-level students may complete a Miami Plan Thematic Sequence (201, 202 required). The program presents ideal preparation for any students hoping to study later at a university in the German-speaking world.

Miami University Intensive Japanese Language Program in Tokyo

This program is nearly a six-week intensive summer language program with 6 Miami credits.

In the first 2 and a half week online period, the students participate in online synchronous lectures on the new grammar, expressions and vocabulary.  During the second in-person phase in Tokyo, the emphasis is on the usage of the acquired linguistic knowledge that students gained during the initial on-line phase. In addition to a review of grammars, vocabularies and model conversational practices with classmates, students are required to converse outside class with native Japanese speakers. They will interact with the volunteering students from the host Japanese university. Other out of class activities that are a part of the program include field trips and  museum visits.

The program gives you a chance to speed up your Thematic Sequences for the Japanese major/minor. The program would prepare you academically and culturally for potential and future study in the Japanese-speaking world.

Other Education Abroad Programs

Miami University's Office of Global Initiatives is the central point-of-contact to find out about various programs for learning your language in an international setting.  There are five main types of education abroad at Miami:
  • Faculty-Led Education Abroad Programs - Department faculty lead students and teach Miami courses
  • Miami University's Dolibois European Center in Luxembourg -– Miami courses taught at Miami's Luxembourg campus
  • Exchange Programs - Programs with other universities where you can directly enroll in classes at the partner institution but pay your regular Miami tuition and fees.
  • Co-Sponsored Programs - Programs offered in collaboration with other universities or providers that charge Miami tuition and fees. 
  • Approved Programs - Program where academic credit can be transferred to Miami, Miami scholarships and awards cannot be used on Approved Programs.

German

Miami in München

Junior year at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in Munich, Germany, at the oldest junior year abroad program in Germany, re-started postwar by Wayne State University in 1953. An academic year in Munich is available at Miami in Munich, a cooperative program between Miami and Wayne State University in Michigan. You will be matriculated at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in Munich, and have the assistance of the tutorial and administrative staff of the Junior Year in Munich on-site. The first semester runs from October until March, the second semester from April until July. All instruction is in German; completion of GER 202 or the equivalent is required for admission.

USAC Program in Lüneburg

The Lüneburg program is ideal for students interested in learning the German language and focusing on European Studies—specifically Germany's role within the European Union. Through formal coursework and personal interaction with the host culture, you will greatly expand your language skills and knowledge of German society. Lüneburg offers students the quality of life of a smaller community without sacrificing the cultural resources and activities of a large metropolitan city. Lüneburg is also only 30 minutes away from former East Germany, providing a unique vantage point from which to study the dynamics of reunification. During the semester, the program offers three diverse academic areas: German Language, Literature, and European Studies. 

Studying in Luxembourg

One or two Miami semesters may be elected at Miami's Luxembourg Center, where students live with Luxembourg families, either German-speaking or French-speaking. The curriculum consists of courses selected from the Oxford offerings as well as those developed especially for the Luxembourg campus. All non-language coursework is done in English.

Japanese

Kansai Gaidai University, Osaka, Japan

A one-year or a one semester exchange program is available to full-time undergraduates at Miami. Students take classes (Japanese language and courses taught in English) in the Asian Studies program. Students pay Miami tuition and fees and room and board. A requirement is a minimum 3.0 GPA.

Russian

Kyrgyzstan: Russian Language Studies in Bishkek

Spend a semester immersed in Russian language in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan! Students will take Russian language and history courses, and will have the opportunity to stay with a host family to further increase their language skills. Earn credit at Miami by studying Russian in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan with the School of Russian and Asian Studies (SRAS). This program allows you to apply your Miami financial aid and pay Miami tuition to study abroad. Bishkek is a small, fascinating city set against stunning mountains in a part of the world that is increasingly important to the United States. Students can apply for scholarships from Miami's Havighurst Center for Russian and Post-Soviet Studies, the Departmenta of GRAMELAC,  and from Federal sources (including but not limited to ROTC students, those on Pell grants, those interested in working for the Department of State, etc).
