In Memoriam: Thomas M. Coakley

Thomas M. Coakley, Professor Emeritus, died on May 21, 2016, a few days before his 87th birthday.  Born in Hamilton, Ohio, he attended nearby Miami University where he received his B.A. in 1951.  He then did graduate work at the University of Minnesota with an interval of military service in the U.S. Army.  He was stationed at Trieste.  He received his Ph.D. in 1959, having written a dissertation about Robert Cecil, first earl of Salisbury.  After teaching for five years in Canada, he returned to Miami University where he taught courses on Tudor-Stuart England from 1963 to 1993.  He published several articles about George Calvert, first Lord Baltimore.  In 1973 he married Jean A. Coakley who taught English at Miami University-Middletown.
