Max Welborn, a long-time faculty member of our department, died in Cape Cod on October 7, 2016.  Max was a French historian with a passion for literature, who joined our department soon after obtaining his PhD from Ohio State University in 1965.  He taught French history, Western Civilization, and a popular course on "The Novel in History" in our department until his retirement in the mid-1990s.
