Students win awards at SPJ regional conference


Miami students win awards. at SPJ conference

Miami University students produced 10 works of journalism honored Saturday in the annual Mark of Excellence competition, sponsored by the Society of Professional Journalists.
Four were announced as first-place winners and six as finalists (the equivalent of second and third) at the Region 4 SPJ conference in Cleveland.
The first-place entries were:
- Ceili Doyle, general news, Miami Student, for "Former Miami prof indicted."
- Kirby Davis, in-depth reporting, Miami Student, for "Fifteen years without closure."
- Julia Plant and Ceili Doyle, podcasts, Miami Student, for "Behind the Brick: Hall Mates, Episode 1."
- UP magazine, staff, in the magazine category.
Finalist entries were:
- Maia Anderson and Maddie Mitchell, general news, Miami Student, for "Words Matter."
- Julia Arwine, feature writing, Miami Student, for "Former Miami trustee reflects on term."
- Emily Dattilo, feature writing, Miami Student, for "Crouton Kid."
- Gorick Das and Arthur Newberry, multimedia stories, Miami Student, for "Your Status."
- Audrey Davis (in memoriam), non-fiction magazine, Miami Student Magazine, for "Champion Standard."
- Devon Shuman, general columns, Miami Student, for "Lilly N Me, Vol. 2."
Thirteen journalism students traveled to Cleveland with JRN program faculty members Patti Newberry and Sacha Bellman to celebrate Miami’s MOE wins.
