Social Program Alumni

Michael Bernstein-At Miami, I learned theory and methods inside and out, but I also learned softer skills that are just as important but not necessarily the things I thought about when I was applying for grad school. Skills like collaborating with others, juggling multiple projects and responsibilities, picking service opportunities, how to recode letters from editors after submitting to a journal. Robert Rydell - I don't think I anticipated how much one-on-one guidance I would get. I also didn't anticipate the supportive atmosphere and wonderful classmates that Miami offered. Miami is an extremely down-to-earth and fun place to be a graduate student. Robert Rydell - I don't think I anticipated how much one-on-one guidance I would get. Christina Brown-I knew I'd conduct research with my mentor, but I didn't expect to collaborate with other graduate students. When students from other labs and I discovered mutual research interests, the faculty supported us and helped us carry out our projects. The social psych program at Miami has a cooperative, not competitive, atmosphere that is evident in its research collaborations and social activities. Chris Chartier-I was blown away by the sense of community that I felt in the social program. Quite contrary to my stereotype of the secluded grad student locked away in the lab, I discovered that the social are is extremely, well, social. There are many collaborations across labs and I really felt that I was a part of a large and intellectually stimulating group.
