The program requirements for the Major in Spanish are changing. Please look below for your requirements in the major, depending on your declaration dates:

Current Program Requirements for the Spanish Major

(36 semester hours in SPN)

Note: SPN 101, SPN 102, SPN 111, SPN 201, SPN 202 or SPN 203, SPN 211, and SPN 370L do not count in the required 36 hours. 

Required Core Courses

  • SPN 311 - Grammar Review and Introductory Composition
  • SPN 312 - Introduction to Spanish Language/Linguistics
  • SPN 315 - Intro to Hispanic Literatures

Required Intermediate Courses

Select 9 hours from the following (one must be 381 or 382):

  • SPN 351 - Cultural History of Spain I
  • SPN 352 - Cultural History of Spain II
  • SPN 361 - Spanish American Cultural History I
  • SPN 362 - Spanish American Cultural History II
  • SPN 381- Spanish Language and Hispanic Culture I
  • SPN 382 - Spanish Language and Hispanic Culture II

Required Advanced Courses

Select 6 hours of 400/500 SPN courses

Required Capstone Course

  • SPN 490 - Issues in Hispanic Literature, Linguistics, or Culture

Major Electives

Select 9 hours from the following:

  • Any 300-level or 400-level SPN course.
  • POR 381 Afro-Brazilian Diaspora Through Film and Arts or

Spanish majors are required to enroll in a Canvas course site called "Career Preparation for Spanish Majors." This is a short series of videos and information pertaining to career prospects and resources. In order to meet this requirement, you must obtain at 80% or better in this Canvas course.
