COURSE OFFERINGS

9 credit hours in Spanish 300/400 level

During this summer study abroad program, you will advance your minor or major by taking regular Miami courses, and you will participate in a unique cultural immersion experience in Spain that will help you develop skills that are essential for your future career, such as cross-cultural competency, foreign language proficiency, and critical thinking.

You can complete up to 9 credit hours that will count toward the Global Perspectives Miami Plan Requirement, and toward your Spanish minor or major. All majors are welcome!!!

Gijón (May 21-June 29). 6 credits from:

  • SPN 342 (Spanish Conversation)
    Prerequisite: SPN 311
  • SPN 352 (Cultural History of Spain II)
    Prerequisite: SPN 315
  • SPN 382 (Spanish Language and Culture II)
    Prerequisite: SPN 312
  • SPN 399 (Spanish Translation)
    Prerequisite: SPN 311

Cultural trip (June 30-July 15). 3 credits

  • SPN 377 (Tasting Spain). Exploration of Spanish culture through travel and cuisine. Students will take cooking classes and participate in culinary events while visiting sites of important artistic or historical value.

PROGRAM TRIPS

  • Bilbao (June 4-5)
  • Long weekends for independant travel: June 9-12; and June 24-26 (costs not included in the Program)
  • SPN 377, visiting: Pazo de Señorans, Santiago de Compostela;  Oporto and Lisbon (Portugal); Mérida, Sevilla, Cádiz, Córdoba, Granada, Valencia, Toledo and Madrid. Cuisine experiences in Bilbao, Gijón, Pazo de Señorans, Cádiz and Granada. Flamenco dancing in Cádiz.

HOW DOES THIS WORK WITH YOUR SPANISH MINOR OR MAJOR?

MINOR: you can finish your minor in Spain
If you have taken 311, and 315 or 312 by December 2021, then:

Spring 2022: take 351
Spain 2022: take 352 + (342 or 399) + 377

OR

Spring 2022: take 381
Spain 2022: take 382 + (342 or 352 or 399) + 377

MAJOR: you can finish several requirements for you major, with only 400-level courses and the capstone requirements after the program in Spain.

Program Fee, $4,250 + Tuition

LOCATION

Students live with families in Gijón (Asturias). 15 miles away from Oviedo and from an international airport, on the shores of the Cantabrian Sea, Gijón offers an attractive combination of maritime tradition, monumental heritage, and modern urban planning right on the seashore. Its marina is a testament to its close links with the sea throughout its history.

Students live with a host family in Gijón:
