GHS 101 - Introduction to Global Health (3)
Introduces the complexity and ethical dilemmas of global health as a practical field that seeks to work with organizations and local communities to solve health problems. Students will learn to assess knowledge from multiple disciplines to thoroughly describe global health problems. Through guest lectures, this course will introduce students to many of the global health studies faculty. Gateway course to the minor.
This course is typically offered every spring semester.
GHS 201- Data and Decisions in Global Health (3)
Develops skill interpreting different kinds of data (qualitative and quantitative) to understand, assess, and make ethical decisions regarding complex global health problems and the programs designed to address them. Depending on the context of the course, specific activities and emphases of the course may differ, and thus students may benefit from taking the course multiple times, although only once will count for the minor.
GHS 201 is designed for mixed qualitative and quantitative methods training in global health, however students may equally substitute one of the following methods courses depending on their specific areas of interest: ECO 311, IMS 261, KNH 295, MBI 361, SOC 262, PSY 293, STA 301, ATH 425. The methods requirement must be complete prior to the immersion experience.
GHS 301 - Seminar in Global Health (3 x 1)*
Explores a variety of current issues and research in global health through in depth discussions and readings. Specific content will vary each semester according to current global health events and the specific perspectives of the professor. For Global Health Minors, this seminar must be repeated at least three times, and over multiple semesters students will be exposed to multiple disciplinary approaches to analyzing global health concerns.
This course is typically offered every fall and spring semester.
* A related hours course may be used in place of one of the GHS 301 seminars.
GHS 401 - Global Health Experience (2)
In conjunction with an approved off-campus experience and a GH faculty advisor, this independent study course enables students to gain a richer understanding of the complexities of global health issues in context, and specifically it offers students an opportunity to explore a global health question that emerges as a result of their off-campus experience. Students will present a literature review that addresses their global health question or concern as well as a summary of the ways in which their experiences enriched their understanding of global health at a professional forum.
Off campus experiences must be pre-approved with applications submitted by the deadlines of Nov. 1st and April 1st. Students are encouraged to discuss off-campus global health experience ideas with Dr. Flaspohler, the GHE Advisor.
Culminating Experience: GHS 477 or (ATH 448 + GHS 491)
GHS 477 - Senior Thesis in Global Health (4 minimum)
Students may design a senior thesis project with any of the Global Health Studies faculty members. Students interested in this are encouraged to identify possible GHS faculty mentors and explore ideas for a senior thesis as early as possible and at least 1 semester prior to the desired thesis semester. The senior thesis project may be stretched over multiple semesters but must culminate in a minimum of 4 credit hours.
ATH 448 - Developing Solutions in Global Health (3)
GHS 491 - Global Health Leadership (1)
Students may take ATH 448 (a MPG Capstone) in which teams write grant proposals that address a global health problem. GH Minor students are required to simultaneously take the 1-credit practicum GHS 491 to develop skills that they will apply in ATH 448. This practicum encourages GHS minors to reflect on qualities of leadership and develop skills in negotiating team problem solving, facilitating the contribution of each team member, and coordinating contacts or networks of consultants to produce a viable grant proposal.
