The Miami University Symphony Band is offered every spring semester for students to study and perform the finest original and transcribed repertoire for wind band. Under the direction of Brooke Johnson, the ensemble typically performs concerts twice a year for the Miami community. Comprised of approximately fifty-five performers, the Symphony Band consists of music majors and students across the entire university, providing a challenging rehearsal and performance experience for qualified students. In addition to traditional works by composers such as Holst, Vaughan Williams, Persichetti, and Schuman, the ensemble performs works by emerging composers that are rapidly joining the standard repertoire.

Wind Ensemble and Symphony Band Audition Instructions for Spring 2021

Audition Process

  • All wind players will be assigned to Symphony Band or Wind Ensemble based upon recorded video auditions. Both ensembles will focus on repertoire that can be rehearsed in our spaces while still following distancing guidelines.
  • In order to allow the conductors to plan adequately, we kindly request that your audition application be submitted no later than November 30, 2020.
  • You may address questions to either Dr. Johnson at humfelbe@miamioh.edu, or Professor Speck at speckga@miamioh.edu.
  • You may choose your audition music! We recognize that many students who are studying privately will be polishing music for their juries, and would prefer not to have to learn more music. On the other hand, some students might find it easier not to have to find suitable music. Below you will find a link to the set of audition materials for Spring 2021. Find your instrument within the set and download the excerpts to prepare. To be clear: we are providing these excerpts for your convenience, you do NOT have to use them.
  • Please note that you must be signed into your Miami Google account in order to access these audition materials. Wind Audition Excerpts »

Audition Procedure

  • Submit your audition materials by filling out this google form: Miami University Spring 2020 Wind Auditions. You will need to answer a few questions and upload your audition video in that form.
  • Use whatever device you have or are comfortable with; the important issue is that you make sure it is in a common format, preferably mp4 or mov.
  • You may pause the device in between excerpts, but each excerpt must be in one “take.” All the scales should be a single “take” also. If you are not using the excerpts, please announce what you are playing. We prefer one video, as opposed to several, shorter ones.
  • The first thing on each video should be you performing the following scales. All pitches are YOUR pitches, NOT concert pitch. If you are accustomed to doing scales full range rather than “tonic to tonic,” please do so.
    • Flute: Ab Major, 2 octaves, slurred; A major, 2 octaves tongued; full-range chromatic scale, articulation of your choice
    • Oboe: D Major, 2 octaves, slurred; Ab major, 1 octave, tongued; full-range chromatic scale, articulation of your choice
    • Clarinet: E Major, 3 octaves, slurred; Ab major, 2 octaves tongued; full-range chromatic scale, articulation of your choice
    • Bassoon: C Major, 3 octaves (if possible), slurred; A major, 3 octaves (if possible) tongued; full-range chromatic scale, articulation of your choice
    • Saxophone: F Major, 2 octaves, slurred; Bb major, 2 octaves tongued; full-range chromatic scale, articulation of your choice
    • Horn: Ab Major, 2 octaves, slurred; G major, 2 octaves tongued; full-range chromatic scale, articulation of your choice
    • Trumpet: Ab Major, 2 octaves, slurred; Bb major, 2 octaves tongued; full-range chromatic scale, articulation of your choice
    • Trombone: A Major, 2 octaves, slurred; E major, 2 octaves tongued; full-range chromatic scale, articulation of your choice
    • Euphonium: Ab Major, 2 octaves, slurred; G major, 2 octaves tongued; full-range chromatic scale, articulation of your choice
    • Tuba: F Major, 2 octaves, slurred; Bb major, 2 octaves tongued (if you can do either of these scales 3 octaves, please do so); full-range chromatic scale, articulation of your choice
