About Us

Making of Theatre

Welcome to the Miami University Department of Theatre. We're a small community of students, faculty, and staff committed to exploring theatre as a medium for personal growth and social change. We can't think of a better way to explore, articulate, and share our stories than through the art of theatre.

Students are at the center of all we do. Our academic degrees are designed to allow students to tailor a course of study suited to their personal interests. Students join our season selection committee and help us choose shows that address their needs and that engage the campus community. Our Independent Artists Series provides students the chance to create their own work and see it performed.

The arts are an integral part of life at Miami University, consistently ranked among the best colleges and universities in the country for its commitment to undergraduate teaching. From academics to career counseling to support of health and well being, Miami's resources are extensive and accessible.

Our Degrees

We offer a BA in Theatre. Rather than providing set tracks or focuses, we work with each student to develop a course of study in theatre that meets their goals. This flexibility allows for change and growth, and opens each student to the possibility of exploring parts of the theatrical discipline that they may not have thought to explore.

Flexibility also allows students to add second majors, minors, internships, and study abroad programs into their college experience, adding valuable insight into creating thought-provoking work. And arming them with more skills to make smarter life decisions.

We also offer minors in theatre arts, music theatre, and dance.

Our Production Season

Miami University Theatre typically presents a four-show season, with two shows in our Gates-Abegglen Theatre (proscenium) and two in Studio 88 (black box). We try to present a wide range of productions over a four year period, including classical work, contemporary work, comedies, dramas, new work, devised work, musicals, and theatre for young audiences.

Our shows are cast and crewed from our undergraduate student body, with no limitations on first-year student participation. Student designers are regularly assigned to productions in our season. And students may qualify to direct as part of our season, and if approved work with a full production team and a budget.

For students interested in creating their own work, the theatre department provides a space and funding for the Independent Artist Series. A student-run board reviews proposals for the series and chooses projects. All management and preparation for the IAS is done by students.
