Beyond the Snapshot: Expanding Your Image-Making Toolbox and Making More Conscious Photographic Choices

This class, designed for photographers of all levels, offers participants an opportunity to learn new photographic approaches and techniques and learn to make more conscious choices in their image-making. Through a combination of slide-shows, demonstrations, creative assignments and critique sessions, the week-long course will push participants to “think beyond the snapshot.” This course will also introduce participants to the basics of Adobe Lightroom and its power to enhance and refine their work. Students will be expected to submit new work each class for the critique sessions.

Supply List

Supplies are subject to change. A final list will be emailed to each participant before the first day of class.

Participants must have access to some photographic device such as DSLR camera or quality cell phone camera. A laptop or desktop computer and means of transferring images from camera to computer is also required. Access to Adobe Lightroom is helpful to follow along during the tutorials but not required.


Studio Fee

All workshops have a studio fee. Fees are collected at the end of the workshop and payable by check or credit card. MU no longer accepts cash.

About the Instructor

Julia Cumes is a South African-born photographer based in Massachusetts. She's passionate about story telling and capturing real moments of human connection and intimacy.

Over the course of her career, she has photographed for a variety of magazines, newspapers, humanitarian and wildlife rescue organizations, businesses, corporations and private clients. Her work has appeared in publications such as the New York Times, Boston Globe, Chicago Tribune and the London Times. She has also worked on numerous long term personal projects and her work has been widely exhibited. Among her awards, she has received a Cape Cod Arts foundation Fellowship, an Alexia Foundation student grant and an "Art Within Reach" grant.

Julia completed a B.A. at Brandeis University, an M.F.A. in writing at Cornell University and a Masters in Photojournalism at Syracuse University’s Newhouse School.

Her blog, Apertures and Anecdotes, features a wide range of photographs and the stories behind them. She also teaches a variety of photography workshops and classes locally and internationally and is a resident photographer at the Cultural Center of Cape Cod where she has a studio/gallery.
