Learn to weave rib baskets using materials from your own backyard. Weaving time will be intermixed with exploring our outdoor surroundings for suitable weaving materials including grapevine, bittersweet, red osier, and honeysuckle. Discover how to prepare these items for weaving and how to make a black walnut dye bath. Strong hands and the ability to walk uneven terrain is recommended. All levels welcome.

Students should bring a pair of garden pruners, an older towel and work gloves.

All workshops have a studio fee. Fees are collected at the end of the workshop and payable by check or credit card. MU no longer accepts cash.

About the Instructor

Mary Doornbos has been a basketmaker since 1983. Her academic credentials include a BA in art education and an MFA in metalsmithing. Basketry has been a passion since moving to the rural south. She has learned many basketry tricks from outstanding teachers over the years. Mary embraces the fact that no machine can make a basket, and that many materials for this craft are available in one's own backyard.
