5.0 Administration

The administration of the College of Creative Arts consists of the Dean, the Department Chairs of each of the five departments, the Director of the Armstrong Institute, the Director of the Art Museum, the Director of the Performing Arts Series, the Associate Dean, and the Assistant Dean.

The College of Creative Arts values and encourages diversity in the recruitment and appointment of administrators.

5.1 Department Chair Search and Appointment

Appointment, Evaluation, and Reappointment of Department Chairs is in accordance with University Policy (MUPIM 12.3 and MUPIM 6.1).

Department Chairs must be tenured members of the faculty and are thus subject to all policies governing the hiring of tenure/tenure-track faculty under MUPIM 12.3. This policy notes the following, "Chairs of academic departments are appointed by the Provost upon the recommendation of the appropriate academic dean. The academic dean shall make the recommendation following consultation with members of the department and chairs of the related departments; appointments should normally be in conformity with the department’s judgment."

Within the context of these policies, the following is recommended as guidelines for the establishment of a well-balanced search committee: The committee will be comprised of the Committee Chair (typically a chair or director from another department/unit within the CCA) and additional members including faculty from the department, broadly reflective of the various ranks and lengths of service in the department; and additional members drawn from the following areas: faculty from a related area, unclassified or classified staff members from the Department, alumni of the department, non-teaching professionals who practice the department's discipline, or students from the department.

NOTE: As per Miami policy, only tenure/tenure-track faculty may vote on the hiring of tenure/tenure-track faculty; thus if a search committee has staff members, LCPL faculty, students, alumni or professionals they are to serve an advisory role only and do not vote or rank candidates.

Upon reducing the number of applicants to a list of finalists, the search committee will submit the dossiers of the finalists to the Dean and the Provost for review. Following approval of the finalists, their dossiers are made available to department faculty, staff, and students.

The Search Committee establishes a schedule for each candidate selected for interview to include: department interviews and activities in accordance with departmental preference and procedures; interviews with the Dean of the College of Creative Arts, the Provost, the Search Committee, and students.

Evaluations of each candidate interviewed are solicited from each of the individuals and groups involved in the search process.

At the conclusion of the interview process, the Search Committee formulates a qualitative evaluation of the interviewed candidates to be forwarded to the Dean.

The Dean forwards the name or his/her recommended candidate to the Provost. The Dean's recommendation to the Provost is normally in conformity with the judgment of the Search Committee. If the recommendation made by the academic dean for appointment or reappointment of a department chair is not in conformity with the department's judgment, the department shall be given a written explanation for the discrepancy. Responsibilities of the chair are assigned by the academic dean.

5.2 Director Appointments

The search process for the Director of the Art Museum and the Director of the Performing Arts Series will generally follow the process outlined above for department chairs.

In the search for a director, the Dean will establish a committee to include staff members from the unit and other committee members relevant to the mission of the unit.

Upon reducing the number of applicants to a list of finalists, the search committee will submit the dossiers of the finalists to the Dean and the Provost for review. Following approval of the finalists, their dossiers are made available to the relevant unit staff members.

The search committee establishes a schedule for each candidate selected for interview to include: interviews and activities relevant to the unit, interviews with the Dean of the College of Creative Arts, the Provost, and the Search Committee.

Evaluations of each candidate interviewed are solicited from each of the individuals and groups involved in the search process.

Appointments and retention of directors are consistent with Unclassified Administrative Staff Search and Appointment Procedures.

5.3 Assistant and Associate Dean Appointments

The Associate Dean is an experienced and respected member of the College of Creative Arts faculty. The Associate Dean is selected and appointed by the Dean, following the advice of the CCA Executive Committee and faculty.

The Associate Dean administers all interdisciplinary programs within the CCA and oversees other administrative responsibilities determined by the Dean to serve the best interests of the College.

The Assistant Dean is a full-time position, responsible for student advising, recruitment, and retention in the College of Creative Arts. The position necessitates collaboration with the offices of Admission and Enrollment Management, Student Affairs, and Academic Affairs, as well as collaboration with CCA Department and Program Chairs and advisors.

The Assistant Dean is a member of the unclassified administrative staff or faculty in the College of Creative Arts.

5.4 Evaluation of Administrators

The College of Creative Arts Committee for Evaluation of Administrators will review all administrators in the College of Creative Arts in years three and five of their five-year administrative appointments. Evaluations will be in accordance with University policy. The composition of the Committee for the Evaluation of Administrators is described in Section 2.5 of this document.

The committee will seek evaluations of administrators and prepare written reports that are submitted to the Dean. The evaluation consists of a written instrument containing items constructed by the committee and the Dean and is designed to solicit both qualitative and quantitative data. The instrument is circulated to relevant faculty and staff members and other individuals as may be determined by the Dean and the administrator. The purpose of the evaluation for each year is described in MUPIM 12.6.

During the fifth year of a Chair’s or Director's appointment, the College of Creative Arts Committee for Evaluation of Administrators will cooperate with and participate in the Dean's evaluation of the administrator in preparation for considering reappointment or continuing appointment.

5.5 Department Chair Reappointment

Late in the fourth year of a department chair's five-year term, the Dean consults with the Chair regarding reappointment or resignation as Chair. If the Chair wishes to stand for reappointment, the Dean insures that the Committee for the Evaluation of Administrators conducts the formal fifth year evaluation.

If the results of the evaluation are favorable to both the department faculty and to the Dean, the Dean forwards the incumbent's name to the Provost with a recommendation to reappoint. If the Chair is not recommended for reappointment or does not wish to stand for reappointment, the Dean initiates a department chair search according to procedures specified in Section 5.1.
