The Miami University Symphony Orchestra proudly announces that it will dedicate its performance at the 2024 National Conference of the College Orchestra Directors Association to the esteemed Maestro Seiji Ozawa. The performance will take place at the McAfee Auditorium in Belmont University on February 16th at 7:30 PM.

Maestro Seiji Ozawa, an internationally renowned Japanese conductor, left an indelible mark on the world of classical music through his leadership with orchestras such as the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Toronto Symphony Orchestra, and San Francisco Symphony. His legacy of excellence and innovation continues to inspire generations of musicians worldwide.

Ricardo Averbach, Music Director of the Miami University Symphony Orchestra, had the privilege of studying under Maestro Ozawa at the Tanglewood Music Festival in 1992. Averbach's mentorship under Ozawa profoundly influenced his musical career and artistic vision.

Ozawa's last concert took place on November 22, 2022, with the Saito Kinen Orchestra, where he conducted, in a wheelchair, Beethoven's 'Egmont' Overture. This poignant performance was broadcast live to Koichi Wakata, an astronaut onboard the International Space Station. Ozawa's dedication to his craft and his indomitable spirit left an enduring impact on all who witnessed his final act of musical expression.

Tragically, Maestro Ozawa passed away of heart failure at his home in Tokyo on February 6, 2024, at the age of 88. His passing leaves a void in the world of classical music, but his legacy will continue to inspire and uplift musicians and audiences alike for generations to come.

In honor of Maestro Seiji Ozawa's memory, the Miami University Symphony Orchestra will conclude its 120th-anniversary celebrations by performing Beethoven's 'Egmont' Overture, conducted by Maestro Ricardo Averbach. This heartfelt tribute symbolizes the orchestra's deep gratitude and admiration for the extraordinary contributions of Maestro Ozawa to the world of music. More details about this final concert of the season are forthcoming.

The Miami University Symphony Orchestra's performance at the National Conference of the College Orchestra Directors Association is a poignant moment for the ensemble, symbolizing their dedication to musical excellence and their deep-rooted respect for their musical heritage.
