CSE 631 Ontologies for Semantic Web
Catalog description:
Principles, practice and current research underlying the use of ontologies for the Semantic Web. Key concepts including: ontology representation and reasoning, ontological engineering, software tools, ontology visualization, and applications.
Prerequisite:
CSE 586 or permission of instructor
Course Objectives:
- To understand the role of ontologies in the Semantic Web
- To understand the basics of description logics, ontological representation, and ontological reasoning
- To develop skills in designing and building ontologies.
- To become knowledgeable about current ontology software tools, e.g., editors, mergers, visualization
- To learn about specific and current research areas, e.g. ontology evaluation, ontology visualization, ontology driven information retrieval, and semantic interoperability.
- To develop a research proposal that could serve as a proposal for the student's masters thesis.
