Research Bio

Dr. Chi-Hao Cheng is a professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.

He teaches courses in electrical engineering, directs undergraduate student projects, and supervises graduate student theses. He developed undergraduate/graduate courses in digital signal processing, digital image processing, real-time digital signal processing, and advanced digital signal processing.

Dr. Cheng’s primary research interests lie in signal processing algorithm development and its applications in different areas including wideband receiver and optical communications systems. Since joining Miami he has authored or co-authored more than 30 peer-reviewed journal and conference articles and co-authored the third edition of Digital Techniques for Wideband Receivers with Dr. James Tsui.

He has received external grants and support from the Air Force Research Laboratory, Dayton Area Graduate Studies Institute, National Science Foundation, Office of Naval Research, Mathworks, Texas Instruments, and Xilinx.

Prior to joining the faculty of Miami University in 2004, Dr. Cheng spent 5 years working in the optical communications industry and developed cutting edge optical communication devices including chromatic dispersion compensator, wavelength interleaver, and dynamic gain equalizer.

His industry work led to three issued U.S. patents and four pending U.S. patents.

Dr. Cheng received his B.S. degree in control engineering from National Chiao Tung University, Hsinchu, Taiwan, in 1991, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Texas at Austin in 1996 and 1998, respectively, both in electrical and computer engineering.
