An update on major events for fall semester 2020, 1 p.m.

As we evaluate our return in the fall the health and safety of our students, faculty, staff and local communities is our top priority. We continue to work closely with public health officials and rely upon the guidance and directives of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Governor Mike DeWine, and the Ohio Department of Health as we make these important decisions.

We have examined many of the major events planned for the fall; Convocation, the return of the Class of 2020 for an in-person September recognition, Family Weekend, Homecoming, and the fall Commencement ceremony.

Because the summer reading program was postponed, we will not be bringing the Class of 2024 and the Miami community together for a Convocation at the start of the academic year.  With regard to the return of the Class of 2020 for an in-person September recognition, Family Weekend, Homecoming, and the December Commencement ceremony — all involving large gatherings and significant travel to and from Oxford by graduates, alumni, students and their families — these events will also not be held on our campuses this fall.

We know this is extremely disappointing news, but we hope you can understand the safety concerns that have led us to these decisions.  For all of our students, their friends, families, and alumni we deeply regret the need to cancel these significant events.  For those who were intending to return for the September in-person recognition and those intending to graduate in December, we are planning an online remote commencement in December which will individually recognize all 2020 graduates – December, August and May, details will be announced at a later date.

For Family Weekend we plan to offer virtual programing, and we will share information as the schedule is finalized.  For athletics, the Mid-American Athletic Conference has delayed the start of the fall sports season with no sports starting before September 3.  The MAC and its member institutions will continue to assess the latest developments related to COVID-19 in weighing the potential impact on fall schedules.
