Vaccine Work Impact FAQs

Each day more and more people are receiving the COVID-19 vaccine. As more employees begin to return to campus to work and we plan for the fall semester, we have received several inquiries regarding vaccination status.

Updated Sept 7, 2021

Are COVID-19 vaccinations required for faculty, staff, or students?

Yes. With the FDA approval of the Pfizer vaccine, we will now require every Miami University student, faculty, and staff member to be vaccinated against COVID-19 unless exempted.

Will students who intend to study abroad be required to be vaccinated?

Not at this time. However, all travel must conform to CDC Travel Guidelines. Please note that CDC guidance for travel may differ for those who are fully vaccinated and some countries may require travelers to be vaccinated in order to enter the country.

May I ask students in my class if they are vaccinated?

No. There is no educational reason for faculty to obtain this information. Vaccination status is personal and you may not ask students in your class whether they are vaccinated. The Student Health Services collects individual student vaccination information. Students who are vaccinated may be excused from the University’s COVID-19 testing program.

Should I come to work if I experience side effects?

Some people have experienced injection site pain or redness, fatigue, muscle/joint pain, and headache. These side effects may be more likely after the second dose of the vaccine. It is OK to come to work with very minor symptoms. All others should be reported to your doctor. Employees will need to follow normal call-off procedures with a fever of 100°F or more.

Do I need to continue masking after I receive the vaccine?

Yes. Receipt of a COVID-19 vaccine will not change any requirements around masking and physical distancing at this time.

Are my family members eligible to receive the vaccine?

Tri-Health, Miami's health care provider, is giving free vaccinations to employees and their family members: All employees, spouses, and dependents 12 years or older (minors must be accompanied by a legal guardian).

To make an appointment, call 513-529-3000.

May I ask employees I supervise if they are vaccinated?

No. There is no business reason for supervisors to ask this question. Human Resources and Academic Personnel Services are collecting vaccination information on a voluntary basis. Human Resources and Academic Personnel Services will not share individual vaccination information or use it to make any individual employment decision.

May I require employees who are not vaccinated to work from home?

No. You may not require employees who are not vaccinated to work from home. Vaccination status is not a factor to be considered when determining whether an employee may work from home.

If everyone in my office is vaccinated, do we need to wear masks or practice physical distancing?

Yes. While you are not required to wear a mask if you are working alone outside or in a single office, Miami requires all persons to continue to wear masks and practice physical distancing. We expect this requirement will extend through the fall semester. If research and CDC guidance indicate this can be changed, the information will be shared and the requirement lifted.
