Preparing for Summer Remote Delivery Adapt your summer course for remote delivery.

This course set-up schedule lists all recommended course set-up and content development activities for Summer 2020 courses transitioning to remote delivery.


Spend one week completing these planning steps.

Connect with your network. Review department resources and eLearning Miami resources, and connect with colleagues in your field.

Outline your course. Review the course objectives and course schedule listed in your syllabus. Use them as guidelines for writing learning objectives for each week/module, and begin outlining a plan for your course.

Utilize our Canvas template. Download our template from Canvas Commons, MU Remote Delivery Template 2020, and use it to set up your Canvas course.


Spend one week completing these redesign steps.

Plan for assignments. Consider summative and formative assignments you can use to assess whether students are meeting your learning objectives. Add assignments to your course outline.

Create opportunities for interaction. Consider ways to add opportunities for student-to-student interaction in your course Add new activities to your course outline.

Source learning materials. Add all of your current readings, videos, etc. to your course outline. Consider where additional materials can be added to prepare students for assignments.

Identify video needs. Identify topics that will require an in-depth explanation from you, especially ones that aren't covered well by your learning materials, and create a list of videos you plan to record.

Plan communication. Develop a communication plan for providing consistent information and feedback. Add your plan and any related policies to your course syllabus.

Streamline feedback. Plan for how and when you'll give feedback on assignments. Design rubrics for all assignments to set expectations for your students.


Spend four (or more) weeks focused on rapid development of content and module structure.

Prototype one module. Add all content to one module in your course, then review it in Student View. Adjust the module's structure/content to finalize its design.

Build the rest of your modules. Copy the design of your finalized module as you begin creating the rest of the modules in your course.

Create an introduction to your course. Create a plan for Week 0—the week before the term—to publish your course. Write a welcome announcement and email to send to your students.

Review your course. Preview your course in Student View to review its design, and invite a colleague to review it.

Final Countdown

Start your final countdown two to four weeks prior to your course start.

Contact your students four weeks before the start. Use your photo roster to gather student emails and send your students information about class expectations, technology requirements, textbook information, and potential synchronous class dates.

Finalize the details two to three weeks before the start. Finalize instructions for all assignments and activities. Review due dates, module settings, and publishing states. Make sure Grades in Canvas match what's in your syllabus. Make final updates to your syllabus.

Launch your course one week before the start. Publish your course in Canvas. Send a welcome announcement. Implement your Week 0 plan.
